As usual when anything fast or old from the Ford world appears there's an awful lot of pish being spouted on here today.

The only Ford i ever owned was a mk1 orion....utter utter st.

However i would give my right arm to own that example . There's nowt better than a fast ford and it sums up my early years drooling over mk2 escorts , cosworths and mexico's.

Only just spotted this thread.

Thank you to all the positive people :-)

All a bit academic as the car is now back in storage, and the adverts deleted a few weeks ago as its no longer for sale this year.

When the offer of 62K was made in the summer the asking price was best offer over 75K so quite a difference. I revised it down a month later given the current economic climate, until it went back into storage.

To all the doubters and people who think its ok to call people they dont know fools or idiots here you go :-

http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBidsL...

As you can see the ebay muppets had a bid as well. Hope that helps you sleep a bit better now.

I did vet the highest bidder and he was a chap from Aus and proved to me he had the money, he also had to budget on top of the bid price for circa 35% extras to cover import duties, but as I was seeking far more than his best bid I didnt follow it up. The underbidder was also very keen and has since bought another I believe.

In order to value a rare desirable item, first find another equal or better example, and then try to find it cheaper. You wont, the good ones are selling for 50k plus and have been for some time. The best known moonstone example has had an unsolicited offer of 70k rejected. These are all facts gents, not guestimates from internet warriors saying no one pays these kind of sums for old Sierras, when in fact they do.

The cars never really properly been for sale, as I dont need to sell it, lots of people though have asked me whats it worth so I thought I would test the market. Like anything it has a price and that was mine. If you want the best thats what its going to cost you.

Its an appreciating asset that I love owning, and thats what it would have taken for me to part with it.

The RS500s have only followed the trend that most other rare modern classic from the 80s have also gone through.

In the Ford world ask an enthusiast what car they would really like to own and a low miles original condition RS500 in moonstone blue is nearly always mentioned. How many are currently for sale ? none

If they dont float your boat not a problem. I notice though that not one person has actually slated the car or its condition.

If anyone has any genuine questions I am happy to answer them

lovely car but you could probably pick up an ex tourer 500bhp jobbie for 65k
Really? I've not really looked at ex-TC Cosworths, but E30 M3 equivalents from the likes of Dutch Touring Car seem to be well north of £100k from what I've seen

Edited by Leins on Tuesday 2nd October 14:24
There's one here; http://www.oakfields.com/html/showroom01Detail.asp...

It's ~£78k on their website but ~£68k on Car and Classic. I think a £65k offer would easily get it.

Beautiful car, I would certainly buy it if i won the lottery.

The number looks familiar, has the car ever 'lived' in Swansea?
I thought so too...

I'm pretty sure that car belonged to the previous owner of my old mk1 RS2000. He was a solicitor in Swansea who had the RS2000 from new in 1974 until I bought it. He sold the escort to buy the RS500. Still had the Evans Halshaw stickers in the window and was completely original when i bought it, down to the steel wheels and no stripes. Looks like he kept the RS500 the same way...

I'm not sure why every is so shocked at the price, all old rare fords fetch huge money especially if they have history with them, I remember seeing a escort rs1600 and a mk1 lotus cortina up for sale at around 80k each

Lovely car, I would also consider purchasing a perfect or near-perfect RS500 if I won the lottery. Not as an appreciating asset, just to use (probably in summer months) and to admire in the garage during autumn/winter.

I'd also look to purchase a RS16i, XR2, RS2000, Escort Cosworth, old Sweeney-age Granada as well as a MK4 or MK5 red Cortina estate. Love old Fords!

My Dad has had a black RS500 since new and I told him I'd disown him if he got rid of it. He didn't know how much they were worth now anyway until I sent him to the pistonheads classifieds. He passed away recently, and I wouldn't get rid of it even if you paid me 70K because to me it will remind me of him aways.

I still haven't driven it, and yeah it might not be the best drive I'll ever have, but it will mean the most to me.

Just got to find somewhere to store it now.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Head over to the RS500 owners website when you have the time, a very friendly bunch

Best to email Paul the registrar direct as well if you would like to sign up, as he has a lot of spammers trying to join, so has to vet any new members.

and its always good to have a chat with Darren, the Database owners as well - a total RS500 nut and long term enthusiast

Thanks for the info, definitely want to get more involved in it. I was 6/7 when he bought it.

Once things have settled down then its definitely the plan to find somewhere for it and keep it going.

As for comparisons with other cars, this is futile in the majority of cases, save for perhaps equiavlent metal.
If this was in response to my 944 turbo comment the limited edition 944 turbo S was sold in 1988, whilst there were more than 500 I haven't seen any offered for over £20k. £65k for a road going RS500 only makes sense if money is no object or you have an interest in selling one.
No, unrelated. Not seen that post.

Of course it makes sense - to the person that wants a top RS500.
Fair enough. £19k was a lot of dosh to me back then and I was sort of relieved when the guy turned it down. What you do with a £65k RS500 I'm not sure, polish it ?, look at it ?, or hope you haven't bought at the top of the market.

I might be alone here but even at the 'right' price, I don't see the attraction.

I've driven countless Cosworths over the years, some sheds, some in pretty decent condition, heavily modified and close to standard and every single time, I've been left feeling deflated and somewhat confused.

I want to like them, but for me, the hype is too great for the car.

I understand that at the time, they were literally a racing car you could walk into a Rallye Sport dealer (remember those?) and hand over your hard earned, but now, they are so ridiculously out of context, that they just don't work.

I was even more disappointed with the Escort, which was at the time my 'hero' car, not anymore!

The only saving grace is that if I had te money, I'd have the option of buying something else, something better, and I could keep a picture of this to remind me I could have done a lot worse.
The two wheel drive cars were fun in a way that modern cars couldn't relate to. No tc control and loads of turbo power. I remember coming off a wet roundabout at maybe 60 mph and giving it full boost in third gear and the car going big time sideways. The gearbox was agricultural, but robust, the worst thing however was the build quality. Shocking doesn't come close. The interior was thrown together, even that legendary engine, had very poor gaskets etc, but was very fundamentally strong even though most needed rebuilding by the early 1990s due to almost constant tuning and unknown maintenance schedules in the second hand market.

I'm a prize fool for thinking this.

So the fog lamps have been removed? If so, its not as it left the factory, therefore NEVER going to get 65k, or 50k for that matter.

But its nice to know there are comedians in the car selling game that can still entertain us!!
Fixed that for you.
Very clever and witty

The fool is the person who pays 65k for an old Ford

That is a fair point. And in that respect, my Delta HPE is worth 25k as that is what it would take for me to part with it!

Looks like I am stuck with it then laugh

The supplying dealer was WH Baker in Merthyr Tydfil which is probably why the plate is familiar to the South Wales users. It was actually a Cardiff issued number in 1987. The first owner was from Leicester so it went straight there, only to return back to Cardiff 23 years later with me (after a spell abroad in a private collection)

A decent mid field Group A RS500 will cost you a minimum of £85k plus these days, the best are £150k plus. Again these are factual prices thats cars have recently sold for.

To see them run again this year at the Silverstone classic was fantastic, and approx 15 of us owners attended on the weekend as well and the general public loved our display.

The attention they get is incredible, I can honestly say I doubt a supercar owner would get much more. You simply cannot pull into a petrol station without some one coming over for a chat every time. People wave, beep flash everywhere you go, and you always see the drivers of cars coming the other way craning there head and mouthing the word cosworth to their passenger. In general folks are always positive and have a story to tell about a friend/neighbour/work mate etc who used to own one.
