Surely you wouldnt buy a turbo to powerslide on public roads. Goes round corners safely, very fast. Only brave, stupid or Mr Rohl talented drive it on the limit. Some people like that its limits are high.

Wonder what's next the BMW M3 ?

Plus I'll add that the 911 Turbo is not made for crushing the 'Ring times. It is really a balls out GT with incredible pedigree that just happens to lap the ring in awesome benchmark times for the last 30 years. Perhaps a bit less flow and more speed attack to it than a track NA RWD manual 911 but then as mentioned (and I think spotted by the author) they are purpose built for different customer types. 911 Turbo is rightly the king of the 911 range. Also how usable are any 400BHP+ 911's in the wet. Not very. UK roads are wet about 40% of the time and a Turbo waltzes across a wet road as well as a dry. Try doing that in a GT3 RS ?
my my my
a lesser car for lesser people?
theres some humdingers on here for sure.
the haters gonna hate
For what its worth Dan, I think youre wrong as to me its the most complete package in a car that I've ever had the pleasure of driving. The only thing its missing is the sound effects and a switchable exhaust would have solved that.

To be honest, this article, to me, is making a bit of a scapegoat out of the 911 turbo, especially in its more modern 4wd guises.
All the points that Dan has made could be applied when comparing ANY car that has a NA 2wd version to its Turbo'd 4WD compatriot, and thats what i think the heart of this article really relates to rather than anything 911 specific. Yes, the 911 range has more variety within than any other car on the market
Yes a NA will make more pleasant noises than a forced induction car (i personally love both)
Yes a RWD will be more "fun" than a 4wd (Fun being taste dependant, some love the sure footed nature of 4wd, while others prefer the movement of a RWD)
An NA RWD is a purer drivers car than a turbod 4WD
etc
etc
etc
Its the same old arguements that have been around for donkeys and will continue to be debates for as long as people have different tastes.
Personally, i wouldnt kick any 911 turbo off my driveway!

I applaud your efforts to try and throw some rationale into this debate, and the gist of what you posted is correct, however the 4wd version of the 911 (the 996 turbo at least) is a '95% rear / 5% front' split, so it is quite different to most 4wd cars (which are normally more evenly split, or in some cases 100% FWD until slip is detected).Trommel said:

It's variable, 5% front would barely be worth the effort.monthefish said:

Turbo or not a turbo, surely the question is manual or pdk?
Very good question ....Should I win the lottery I would have
997.2 Carrera 2 GTS Coupe Manual .... love the purity of RWD, NA, LSD, Manual .... as an everyday car alongside the Turbo S Coupe
997.2 Turbo S Coupe PDK possibly for ultimate thrills in acceleration
997.2 GT3 RS Manual for the ultimate in driver involvement
I have a 996 Turbo S with the PCCBs and importantly a Tubi exhaust. She purrs at idle and sounds like a Spitfire flying through the fires of hell at full chat. The brakes have as much feel as a dead wombat but work fantastically well. She really is fun to drive and not too fast - provided you never shift into fourth. I've been to the Nordschleife once and really enjoyed it, but four laps is all the front tyres would give before PSM started coming on in mostly every corner - and I wasn't driving her so hard as I'm merely an OK driver.
