RE: EU to outlaw noisy cars?
Discussion
I both own a V8 w/a Tubi system on it, and live on a busy seafront road.
Me & the missus pop up like meerkats whenever something that sounds good drives by, and the only irritating noises are the aformentioned kids with souped-up shopping cars and BLOODY MIDDLE AGED MEN ON HARLEYS blipping them at the lights!
Most large capacity, multi cylindered engines make a good noise, esp. when amplified. Most hatchbacks/motorcycles do not.
Both categories that fall outside these proposals.

Does anybody realise how quiet 68Dba is....I bet the tyre noise is more, and at what speeds are they proposing?? Thankfully it does not sound like it is retrospective...although it will of course be applied rigorously in the UK but ignored averywhere else....especially Germany.
Hav`nt they got anything better to do...oh sorry, forgot they are on the EU gravy train and have to justify their existance.

Another pointless exercise in wasting taxpayers money on unecessary regulation by the fun police.....if only we could have a referendum in this parliament!
Whatever next?...I fart louder than 68 decibels....

I see this as a good thing. The vast majority of noisy cars sound awful and even those that don't are annoying more of the time than they're pleasurable to listen to. As long as they don't try to apply it retrospectively to existing cars, that is.
Which standard noisy cars are you thinking of that sound bad? remember this is for new made and sold cars not 15 year old Saxos with bean cans on. Most of the best sounding cars aren't actually that loud anyway. It's the tone that makes a great sounding car, not the volume.
ETA: Ah, just realised that it's just a type approval thing, not including modifications. Complete waste of time, then; I can't think of a single standard car that I'd consider to be too loud.

I'm all for freedom of choice, if you want a loud car and it makes you happy then go for it. Most modern cars now are so quiet at the exhaust that the tyre and wind noise the generate is far, far louder. Walking to work a few weeks ago, I actually noted that unless it was a performance-oriented car, regardless of OEM or aftermarket exhaust status, the tyres are what you hear long before and after the car has passed. But bringing noise down on that sort of thing is way to difficult, so the EU picks an easy target like exhausts again.
The MEPs are really struggling to come up with more legislation so its come to this. I guess they have to somehow justify the 8.4bn it costs to keep them there.

I guess none of you have ever lived in a ground floor apartment right next to a set of traffic lights at a busy junction.
A few years ago I moved to a bedsit for 6 weeks while my house got new plumbing, power and plaster. The place wasn't nice but I could live with that. What I couldn't live with was the idling cars sat less than a metre from my window 75% of the time, day or night. The lights changing to green was the worst part as all the idling cars were then revving to pull away. I had planned to stay there for 6 months while the house got finished but I couldn't bear it so moved back into a renovation, which is another thing I would never recommend! If I lived with those lights for a few years, I could see myself going crazy!
I like the sound of engines as much as the next petrolhead, but we all need quiet time in our lives!
I now live in the sticks where it is quiet most of the time. There's a stock car circuit less than 2 miles from my house and those guys on full chat on a Sunday afternoon aren't as loud as the fool around the corner that has a beancan on the back of his car. I'm not joking, if I'm in the garage tinkering at night, I can hear him for a good 3-4 minutes before he pulls into the street. The bit that annoys me the most is that he's terrible at parking. Hearing a loud surge of acceleration every 10 seconds makes me want to rise and kill! These are the type of exhausts that really should be outlawed, there's no need to have a vehicle THAT loud, especially at the lower level of the rev range.
If this proposal does become law, it doesn't mean that new performance cars will be quiet and dull. These days more manufacturers are using the "acoustic speaker" solution to make their cars sound more appealing in the cabin. I think the speaker solution will evolve into something quite promising even if EU rules don't change. With the global shrinking of engines, manufacturers will have to try harder to impress the media and potential buyers. Who knows, in 10 years time new cars might sound quiet outside and AMG like inside. I can live with that!
