It's amazing to think you've still got both - I remember enviously reading your posts what must be about 10 years ago back when I had a Mondeo and lusted after an E39.
Cheers, the plan is to drive both cars in to the ground as neither owes us anything. In fact I think we've been very lucky with both although the dreaded tin worm is starting to make an appearance ...However have an old '96 E34 tourer with 99k on the clock as a "spare" and "summer" car for the wife and picked up a 56 plate Ford KA for my daughter earlier this year with just under 9k on the clock!!
Although the ///M is the only one I drive daily!!!
Have decided that "bangernomics" is the only way forward
I just gifted my '97 740iL to my cousin last week.... But.. I'm the original owner and it had about 330k on the clock.
Original engine, original trans rebuilt once (by myself I might add). Everything in the suspension had been replaced, much of it 2-3 times over, numerous window regulators as well.
I did some calculations, it probably burned $40,000 or so worth of fuel, another $10,000 in tires, $8,000 in just oil changes (its had close to 100 oil changes!) plus repairs... The cars had more spent on it than I paid for it!
Still it was sad to see it go, I'd had it since November of '96.

That is a well looked after car by someone who knows what goes on under the shiny paintwork. Your rebuilding "trans" a certain indicator of that plus all the other regular maintenance stuff. It really isn't Rocket Science.Original engine, original trans rebuilt once (by myself I might add). Every new car I've bought since the 1960s I've serviced and maintained myself. I used to travel in my job and so most have had a hard life but all completed high mileages and none ever left me stranded at the roadside. Some of the used 'project' cars I've purchased where previous owners had given up because of expensive reliability issues not rectified which then become reliable after some basic investigation, rectification and maintenance.
Worth repeating, it aint Rocket Science.
Finally those high mileages were completed in the British Products of Longbridge, Cowley and Abingdon. Now there's a thing ...
My son's Rover 600 is about to turn over 200,000 miles and that also has a hard life as it's used for his travel at work for the past eight years. Ah, but that's because of the Honda engine John. Er, no, the 620ti is the one 600 with the Rover engine.
Much the same with my MG ZS. Never missed a beat and coming up for ten years old this month. Never been worked on in a garage and simple regular DIY maintenance is all its had. My Porsche and VW driving neighbour sincerely believes that is also due to having a Honda engine... .... No, it has the "They all do that" K-Series.
Funny old game folks and cars.

My old 1990 Passat 2.0 16v GT, just clicked over to 242000 miles. Got a box full of suspension bushes and brake flexi hoses here, it won't be dieing any time soon After 7 years of ownership it's still my daily, gets driven 200-300 miles every week.
I had a B3 Pissrat GT estate with 232k on it. Bought it for £90 with 1months mot and 5 months tax, all I did was replace a rear wheel bearing for the MOT and used it til the tax expired. Still sold it for £450.Mrs Mk1Matt's Galaxy is on 187,000 so should be hitting the big 200 about this time next year. It's a diesel, and on it's original injectors, DMF and turbo. It was remapped (115 to ~145bhp) when we bought it at 115,000 miles. Since then, and aside from normal stuff like brakes and tyres, it's had a new exhaust, a couple of brake calipers, a pair of handbrake cables, an auxilliary water pump and an air-con radiator.
It's getting overdue for some work on the EGR valve - replacement/cleaning/bypass is on the cards for later this year.

Seeing as the 100,000 mile club is so easy to reach with modern cars. 200,000 thou is the
next target.
Most cars these days will reach 250~300K with ease anyway, so lets take the stigmatism out
of 100K.
Post up you high mileages.
My E46 M3 is just a beginner at 113K.
My W124 300TE-24 was my highest at 432,000next target.

Then there was the W114 280E at 272,000
My current W126 500SEL is on 235,000 and going strong
Sold my W123 280TE just past 200,000
All of my other cars have passed 100K with ease ; the only exception being my 1957 W105 Ponton 219 which still has a genuine 68,000 Km after 31 years in my ownership .

I'm tempted by a 2.0HDI Citroen
The power delivery of the 110hp 8v units is a bit fustrating with the torque dropping over 2k rpm! However it can be fixed, I know a friend with a computer (PHer too)
