Maybe... but when I see someone dossed out in exclusive brands, eating with their mouth open and holding their fork in the air, I wonder if they think "wow, people must think I'm real classy cos' I'm wearing a Dior scarf..."

Anyway, I realise I'm taking this way off topic, so my apologies for my little rant.
There are people with absolutely no etiquette in McDonalds too. But I guess that is accepted?
They know their place!

i'd argue a dior scarf is practically the same as a cheap scarf thats same colour etc. a porsche macan is diff to say a kia 4x4
Whilst I don't own a Dior scarfe, I do own a fair bit of Hugo Boss, Armani etc and there is a noticeable difference in quality between that stuff and much cheaper clothing. Admittedly, some money does go to the brand name, but the quality is there.

Look at your garage!!

Porsche Boxster 981S

Land Rover Freelander 2.2 HSE

If that is not a case of trying to show off I don't know what is.

A cheap 911 and a cheap Range Rover! Dear oh dear! wink

I am just joking by the way.

I do however find it absolutely hilarious how judgemental people are these days.

Not saying I'm not for a second, but the art is being able to keep your mouth shut.

I agree 100% re scarf, except its price and perceived value of course.
I wasn't in any way attacking the Macan.
I was referring to coppice's comments re sheep-like buyers, that's all.

So you're fine with pretentious people, then?
That was my only point.
Sorry you wanted to make WW3 out of it.
Calm down.

Nothing wrong (how could there be?)with buying something for its quality.
Issue arises when one is buying an expensive item, not for its intrisic quality, but because it might impress others.
That was my point, apparently very badly made, judging by the furore it has elicited!

You are 100% right: I only bought the cars I could afford, and did not waste money stretching to a 911 or whatever just in the vain hope that I might impress someone = the very point I was making.

The art is understanding someone's else point of view, even when it doesn't match yours.

I dress every day to impress others, when I am at home I may wear a paid of scruffy old jeans and a sweatshirt, but when I am out I need to look good, not flash, but well presented.
I would rather see someone in a nice pair of jeans and a shirt than some ill fitting suit from Next.

Buying something you don't like yourself because you think it will impress others is the real issue.
But then I think not buying something you like yourself because of how others will judge you is even worse. Spineless.

I guess a lot of this comes down to what 'set' of people we associate ourselves with?
And more importantly what 'set' of people we do not want to be associated with?

I will be honest and say I have fallen victim to that myself, I didn't pull the trigger on a year old C2S as I didn't want the neighbours thinking 'flash tt!'

I also judge others as well, it is human nature, but I am trying to stop doing it as much, as I have realised it is only me that misses out in the end.

That was my point completely.

You came across as completely the opposite to that.

Oh behave. Haha
These modern SUVs are right up there in the 'as good as it gets' catergory when it comes to relaxed and comfortable drving, with 7 series and S Class about the only realistic everyday cars that beat them, certainly more comfy than the equivilent A6 etc.

A 911 and an Evo is just not anywhere near.

I was in M3's for ages and it was fine, I even drove a CSL as my everyday car for 7 months and 12k miles, again it was fine, but once you get into something really comfy and refined, going back to something like the above is always a compromise for those days you want to 'press on'.

I have to say that when I see a Scooby or Evo all blinged up I don't think there are about as showy as you can get.
I would be embarrassed driving one, same as in a cab, my wife had a cab and I used to fiddle with the radio at lights, hated it. I don't think that in a truck.
Different perceptions.

smile. I suppose that for me my compromise is at a very different level, I just think lots of people justify a big SUV as a family car which then spend almost all of its life with one person in it (again, apologies to those that really do use them like that) when they should just admit, they just like big SUV's smile

I like smaller more responsive cars, and even the hardest suspension doesn't feel uncomfortable in normal driving.

Shall we start another thread, instead of boring the pants off everybody (including me)?

Haha, I didn't suggest you liked Hitler at all.
I was saying that we judge people by what they wear, where they eat, and what they drive and then pigeon hole them because of it, and generally because it doesn't fit into what we think is right.

It was a tongue firmly in cheek comment about another person who did the same as that a while back.

The SUV threads have just been hilarious over the last week, and it was a matter of time before this thread went the same way.
I don't like convertibles, but I just keep on them, if others like them good on 'em.

This has just been announced......

Can't wait for the fallout on that thread!! wink

Now that is hideous, buy hey it would be a dull old world if we all agreed on anything and everything, each to their own and all that.

Now as for impressing others I would never buy any vehicle because people might look up to me or hoping that my purchase may increase my social standing.

First and foremost i'd buy a car like the Macan because it would offer me great all weather performance and good motorway manners as well as a high up viewpoint whilst offfering practicality. Looks and yes I think it looks good in a compact SUV kind of way only factor into a small part of that decision but lets face it, no one wants an ugly car do they?

I know what you are trying to say but technically any man wearing any type of scarf whatsoever is a kunt. No excuses, a kunt.

This 100%

The only man qualified to wear a scarf is Tom Baker.

This entirely. And I have a friend who had both a 987S as well as a 996 special edition (bit more powerful than an S) at the same time and said the Boxster was the better drive. He sold the 996, kept the Boxster and bought a DB9. Sold the DB9 and kept the same Boxster.

Was very funny on the odd occasion when he was told he bought it because he couldn't afford a 911....

Back on topic. I think it looks fantastic. I'd drop £50k on a decent spec diesel all day long when compared to it's competition. I see one of these in my future once my current finance deals has finished.

I'd even consider upsetting the kids and chopping the family XC90 for one.
