Conservatives Will Reverse Green Speed Trial Ban
2nd January 2014
Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has backed local Conservatives in pledging to reverse a Green ban on the historic Speed Trails, if it goes ahead at a council meeting later this month.
A meeting when the final decision on the future of the Speed Trials will be made will held on Thursday 23rd January. Brighton & Hove Conservatives, in an initiative led by Cllr Ken Norman, have pledged their support for the Speed Trials to continue and would, if in control of Brighton & Hove City Council, allow the trials to continue. A petition that has been launched by supporters has already received nearly 8,000 signatures and is the most popular petition ever on the Brighton & Hove City Council website. To sign the petition, click here.
The world-famous Speed Trials are run by Brighton & Hove Motor Club (BHMC). The competition began in 1905, which according to BMHC, makes it the longest-running motorsport event in the world. The Speed Trials showcase a wide range of cars and motorbikes racing over a quarter of a mile along Madeira Drive, on Brighton¡¯s historic beachfront. For more information on the club, click here.
Commenting, Mike said: ¡°The Speed Trials are a local institution which, understandably, has a huge following across the South East. Of course motorsports by their very nature are dangerous, but along with tens of thousands of fellow enthusiasts, I¡¯ve always loved going down to watch the races on a sunny afternoon by the sea. Given the overwhelming support for the Speed Trials, I hope that the Green administration will take note of calls from residents to allow the event to continue.¡±

Whilst I wholeheartedly support the endeavours to save the Speed Trials, the choice of bland, modern cars in the photograph to promote the campaign is rather misguided, I believe.
Why not ditch the recent cars and motorbikes, expand the historic element, and go for a Goodwood revival by-the-sea image?

Oops should have said. I live in Hove and have competed at the Speed Trials a couple of times, marshalled, as well as spectating from when I was 15. A truly iconic event but this is probably the thin end of the wedge with the Greens in power. There are a lot of vehicle related events at Madeira Drive, Veteran and vintage run, a couple VW events, Ace café Reunion run and Incarnation, London to Brighton historic commercial run, and they’re just the ones I can think of.

The Press Association posted the story on Thursday and things went a bit mental. It was on Meridian (local ITV) Friday evening, local BBC TV (South East today) Friday morning and a live interview on BBC Radio (local; sussex and surrey) on Saturday morning. BBC website on friday morning. Also in Daily Mail and Telegraph yesterday (columns, not news stories). Someone has linked the Telegraph above.
All of these are linked on the Facebook page and twitter feeds.
Over 9000 signatures now, please keep sharing and talking about this.
