The only time a warm hatch will come close would be rolling start in third gear.

New FWD hot hatches will out accelerate a 111R rolling. Even the new Mini JCW will. Lotus is about handling, not so much acceleration, they run out of puff way too quick. This R32 just got spit roasted https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=39&v=l81nR_eey...

Am I the only person who is struggling to think of a PH vehicle that I don't get? I can see the appeal of every PH car I can think of.
No I'm with you. There's a difference between not personally liking something and not 'getting' it. I understand people who don't like TVRs for example but it's not hard to get them surely - they are loud, fast, slightly dangerous and set your pulse racing. What's not to get? (I love them - I also love 911s.)

I am much the same. There are (many) 'PH' cars which don't appeal to me, but it's a struggle to think of one I don't get. Thought of one - the Bently Continental GT3-or-whatever-it's-called. 2.2 ton luxo barge with maybe 50kg and the rear seats taken out. I get it from the marketing perspective of linking it to the race car, but I don't get why someone would buy one! Good for whoever does, though.

What sort of speeds are you thinking? Are you talking about something meaningless like from 2000rpm in 4th gear?I'd be surprised if there are hot hatches pulling away from 111Rs on the long straights at Snetterton and Silverstone, for example.

Lotus Elise/Exige; ugly, underpowered and overrated handling. Seriously overpriced and a warm hatch will show them a clean pair of heals.g
Depends what you look for in a car. I adore mine - no FWD hatch gets remotely close IMO.The problem with mx5's is that there's so little to compare them to sportscar wise at the price range (the mk1's/mk2's that is, at sub £2K) so they get tested against far more expensive machinery. Equally I can't really stand reading arguments where people justify for example a clio 172 over an mx5. There's plenty of fwd hatches with 170hp for 2K, how many good handling rwd convertible sportscars can you find for the same.
If you gave me 3 times the budget and tossed me the keys to a boxster/3ltr z4/ s2000 then im sure my mx5 would be leaving pretty quickly.

for me, it has to be the 320D . Apparently no-one needs anything more than that. Drove one a few weeks ago and was utterly disappointed (and almost seasick)
Seriously though, I'd have to agree with the others who just don't 'get' VAG cars. Driven several from all 4 brands and none did anything for me. A friend has an S4 which, although undoubtedly quick just left me completely cold.
The Z4 is another which I just don't understand the love for - test drove several (all the earlier, soft-top version) and was very disappointed. the 2 & 2.5 l weren't overly quick and the steering was utterly dull and lifeless. Didn't copy well with the poor surface of the A14 either.

My S2 K-series 111S is a match with a friends Megane R26 with 315bhp up to 70. After that he's long gone, then we hit a corner and I've caught him again. May be having another tussle with him at Blyton in a few weeks.I'd be surprised if there are hot hatches pulling away from 111Rs on the long straights at Snetterton and Silverstone, for example.
My car also pulls a few lengths on another friends Clio 200.

For non modified cars with modern day rubber such as the Michelin Supersport and a twisty B road it will still be the driver who is the limiting factor, not the car. The gearbox is short to, 3rd is about 85 which is the same as 2nd in a Boxster / Caymen.
No exploding engines either

I don't see the fascination with any vehicle fitted with a V-Tec engine*
Revving the b
ks off something on public roads is about as doable as doughnuts in a police station car park. There's nothing of any use to the daily drive until you get your revs up, so effectively, for 99% of the time, you might as well be driving around in something a lot more mundane.

- I drove an Atom with the supercharged V-tec engine and that doesn't count.

- steering feel. Very probably the finest steering of any car ever built.
- handling/ride. Mine is very benign yet will happily drift around corners.
Either you are into that sort of thing or not. Besides it is more than fast enough on the road - I couldn't care less for something like a Golf R.
It is a stunning car IMO.
