Great SOTW

Just sold my 3.2 Sport, after MOT'ing it and all it needed was a slight exhaust blow & a pair of shock absorber bushes attending to. Should have kept it for the fk all I sold it for, but the Missus was giving me earache. Very upset 6 year old son though who can't understand why Ive kept my somewhat festering E30 325i...

Most people who buy cars like this or an M5 have been driving a fair few years and have owned lots of cars. It gives perspective, it's how you know whether a car is good or not. wink

That was all really. His post said...

The bloke that owns this offered a swap with my Mondeo. I'm quite tempted, but since I'm in Plymouth this Easter its a bit far for me too go. May give him a ring next weekend when I'm back in Bristol.
There's a fair amount of rust on the rear arches.

This is an exciting car and excellent shed of the week.
Just make sure you have a close look at the bodywork. The X300 can have horrible rust. If the body is solid or if you are good with a welder, then you can't buy more for a grand!

Just goes to show you know sod all about cars, the straight six in these cars is well known for being one of the greatest developed.

I think this and the v8 that followed are probably the nicest aesthetically of that particular shape of Jag smile

Obviously it's a Clarkson car (think he had both versions)and I remember vividly the face off with the e39 m5 though it was on his Head-to-Head vid - may have done it on TG too, though my memory's not what it once was lol Relaxed shot taken from said vid...

Tiff and him blasting about Millbrook getting air over the default hill bit where Mr Bond once had a slight tumble in a DBS laugh

Have to say, the price band of these cars does tempt me but the running costs just terrify me. A8s, e34 m5s, though maybe not quite SOTW territory, fall in a similar bracket for me in terms of what I could afford. But still, after years on finance I'm tempted to just go mad for a few months and get a big, quick barge like that. I could reason it's just a spacious 4-door saloon, which is cheap to buy and ignore the mpg, parts prices and such. Well, until it went catastrophically wrong laugh

I agree. The AJ16 is smooth, powerful, relatively light and extremely durable. The AJ6 from which it is developed was the first twin cam 24 valve all-aluminium engine in volume production. It is an excellent engine.

I've got one. '95 Black with Oatmeal. Cost me around £50 to make it pass it's first MOT under my ownership. Front wheel bearing and 2 brake pipes. Cost me sub £1500. Much more has been spent on it in 2 years but that's because I want it to be as good as I can get it. Fixed my rusty arches with V8 arches bought for £25 each and welded them in myself. At £1000 it's worth a punt. Engine is bomb proof, suspension can sag at rear if 7 coil springs are still in situ, later models had 9 coils. Clocks can fade. CPS can fail, ignition coils can crack but then so were mine and the car still worked fine. Pretty much regarded as the last of the 'home mechanic' Jags. Personally I don't think the parts are that expensive and there are plenty of breakers out there. There's a growing xjr6 modification brigade out there also. The best bit is that it just looks so cool.

Agreed. He's a legend, also random fact- he bought a VW Type3 off my brother a while back before his TV fame and converted it into a motorised sofa (it was fairly shot). He's a top bloke.

that is a great motor. At any price, you need to just run till it goes pop..you will never get any of your money back on them..buy with that knowledge and enjoy..I may have to get one of these old things shortly

You're going to have to help me out here. I can't find a single XJR on ebay up for less than a grand. What I can find are examples with some MOT and service history up for £3.5k+. I'm not saying there are £300 ones without any MOT, I'm saying that's what the current owner will get when he weighs it in when it fails it's MOT.
There's a completed listing for 700 odd quid. I was looking at quite a few of them a while ago because I was considering the running gear for a kit project - 600 to 800 for ones with no test seems to be the going rate. I doubt this one would go for less than that with no test.

Absolutely not. My entire motoring career has been barges in the sub £5k camp (including an XJ40, for what it's worth), but you've got to be realistic about these things. This is £1000 worth of scrap or parts, nothing else.

Fair play on the SIII, I've always fancied one.

Except that in 300's defence he's talking about an experience he actually had, whereas you are making assumptions...

...for me the gamble is all part of the appeal. Yes, it probably will need a fair bit of work to get it MOT'd, but it might not. And that's what makes it so tempting (for me at least)
Yeah and I once drove 1,200 miles around Morocco in a Fiesta with no detectable oil on the dipstick. I realise I 'got away with it' and it's not something I'd go suggesting to other people based on the fact that it worked out for me....same deal with buying a £700 V12. 300bhp got lucky, nothing else.

Can you point me towards one of these 300 quid MOT failure XJRs that you're basing your reasoning on? Shoddy ones with no test seem to go for about 700 on eBay. That suggests to me that this one is considerably less of a gamble than you think.

All I'm saying is. You are making assumptions based on hot air. Maybe it is junk, but maybe it isn't. Maybe the current owner thinks a bit like you. Whereas it might be possible to buy it. Do £150-200 worth of home repairs and get 12 months ticket on it. Even if it's a little rough round the edges, it's still a good looking, cool, powerful, comfy cruiser. That'll probably still be worth £700-1100 this time next year.

But of course you'd need to go look at it and make that decision based on it's condition and how it drives.
