I bought a BRG 98 X308 3.2 Sport that we took in px at work a couple of months ago,got it at trade money so £400 with a full ticket!
Still looks great, lovely comfy cream Leather but as others have said very cramped for a big car but you get used to it,soo smooth and comfy to drive,I get 22mpg back and forth to work and 27 on a run.
Its smack in the middle of the Nikasil cars but its lasted 113k so I guess it'll be ok and at £400 if it blows up tomorrow who cares!

My 1999 V8 Sovereign never showed any signs of Nikasil trouble right up to 85,000 miles when I sold it. As other have said, that problem has really gone away now that we have the pleasure of low sulphur petrol. Back in the day, I ran mine on Shell's finest Optimax. Whether that helped, I don't know.

Aha, have read back through the thread now, very usefull and looks like no Nikasil worries for me,hurrah!
I wonder if anybody's Xj8 still has the original Jag badged Motorola car phone, mines long gone and the proper Jag ones with the Jag badge on go for more than I paid for the whole car!

Another big vote for the X300 XJ.

You will not find another car as new and as pretty - the last of the big low cars with a beautiful pencil profile.

Parts are (mostly) cheap and readily available as so many are being broken and local indies can handle them easily - no expensive computer bits!

People will think you are a bit minted and rather classy, but it costs peanuts (relatively speaking).

I've got the Motorola Jag phone in my X300 Sovereign. A great accessory, and a £900 option when the car was new.

I've got the Motorola Jag phone in my Sovereign. The invoice for my car says it was a £900 option when the car was new.

Also, another cool X300 feature is the way the dial layout follows that of the earlier S1, S2 and S3 XJs - and the later XJ40s of course. You'll also see most of the dash in the Aston DB7.

What sort of insurance cover would you need if you want to sorn something but still want to insure against theft or vandalism? I've been considering buying 'a project' not sure what yet but dont trust it not to disappear.

So is his insurance reasonable.
Yes. I'll ask him tomorrow how much. I know he is in the JEC so that helped.

I like that. A lot. I fancied a 740, not any more!

I looked at both but found the jag cramped. For the size of the car, the jag cabin is rather small. The 740 was a lot more comfortable in my opinion.

Agreed they are very low.

What sort of performance do you get from these lovely ladies? 3.2 in a heavy car (they hadn't gone aluminium at that point had they?) can't be brilliant.

Sorely tempted, but completely unjustifiable. I have a Jag itch, especially as I hit 40 this year.....
+10 here.

Would I be right in saying this has been the best received and most univerally popular SOTW in recent memory?

I even fancy it myself but being tall I've learned that you buy BMWs and Mercs and not Jag - but - but - but

I'm 6 foot 4, powerfully built and a conpany director and the X300s are
more than comfortable for me.

Not that much room behind me in the swb, but the lwb has masses of rear leg room, even with the front seats right back.

Another cool X300 feature:

There are separate electric seat controls on the back of the front passenger seat, so the rear passenger can move it forward to get even more space.

Contempoary road tests found the 3.2 XJ6 should manage 0-60 in around 9.5 sec and go on to 130 or so with the wind behind it. That may sound OK for a big barge but heavily laden and in hilly areas it'll struggle to make reasonable progress and drink fuel. It's hampered by a relatively crude autobox and an engine that's reluctant to rev and is noisy when you do give it some welly - there was a 5 speed manual option, usually found on the base spec. cars - which makes the car feel much quicker.

If you only need a leisurely drive for wafting or long distance touring then a automatic 3.2 is fine - I had one for years - but you like to get a move on then you'll have to seek out either a manual version or a 4.0 auto which also has a better gearbox - or buy an XJR.

Nice. One of the last XK6 engined Jaguars.
Sadly not, this will have the 'AJ16' engine. The last cars with the XK engine was mere made in the early 90's, XJ's haven't had them since the series 3 (I think?)

Friend had one of these, really really nice. From the moment I got in it during the test drive it just felt right. Everything you want from a jaguar, and this has a lovely colour combination. I'm not a huge fan of that dash (I prefer the XJ8) but that's nit picking and everything else is great.

ETA: why is it under boring stuff? RWD + straight 6 means it's not, surely?
Nothing 'sad' about the XJ16 engine in my opinion - the best engine Jaguar ever produced and certainly better than the early V8s. I love the traditional dash and door veneers - everything went 'Fordy' after that and lost the bespoke, gentleman's carriage quality - shame.

This car doesn't deserve to be labelled a 'shed' IMHO and represents superb value for money.

I bought an x300 XJ3.2 Sport back in 2008, it lasted 4 weeks - as long as it took the V5 to come back from Swansea! My wife took the unrelenting piss out of me for driving an old man's barge! The car did have some presence though, sold it and broke even, even after I taxed it and had it serviced. Even now I keep looking at the previous shape XJ TDVi, they are incredible value for money.

Good on you for having a mind of your own smile As for insurance, try Esure or LV, i've always had great quotes/cover from them. When i was your age i had a Sierra XR4x4 2.9 running approx 240bhp, & i declared it with the insurers & i was paying under £500 a year. That was through a company called A-plan.

It was bought on impulse, it did look a cracking car, and to be fair it was good. It had about 80000 miles on it and was purchased without seeing it from eBay! Got it home, had it serviced and checked over at the local Jag indie, who gave it a clean bill of health. I polished and waxed it, and it came up a real treat. Although non metallic black, it really did shine. However, it was a big car and the Mrs would go absolutely nowhere near it and took the piss out of me, so put it up for sale as soon as the V5 came through. I paid £2K for it, spent around £200 on the service and tax and sold for £2200, it was a cost neutral exercise in effect.

I'm 6' 6". My X300 feels just right. I really like the way the car wraps around me - I liked the E38 I test drove, but the XJ had that certain something that made it an easy choice.
