For the record, I absolutely love cars. However, what "f**ks me off" (stupid turn of phrase) is the completely disproportionate emphasis that some people place on their car, and absolute aversion to exposing it to the sort of day-to-day tasks for which it was actually designed in the first place.

It's akin to a housewife getting really precious about putting someone else's dirty clothes in her coveted washing machine in case it makes the pipes dirty...

You are in a TINY minority - get over yourself and enjoy your car, or remain perpetually frustrated and don't drive anywhere.
Whilst I wouldn't go to the bell-ended lengths of slinging my car across two spaces I do generally fret that my nice motor is going to get dinged by some cretin who can't park properly (chiefly because it has been damaged on a few occasions) so I will look for somewhere quiet or out of the way to park when in a carpark.

The end of a row is usually ideal (only one neighbouring car to worry about and you can scrunch against the end to make extra room to allow for carelessly opened doors or bad parking) but really, no matter where you put your car and how much safety space you try to leave you will inevitably get some idiot who wants to park two inches away beside it.
While to you it may be a "nice" motor, it's ultimately a mass-produced VAG group car that you could buy parts for in any large town...

Amusing thread smile

FWIW, I don't have any issue with taking up 2 spaces in an empty car park. I think doing it diagonally makes it look more belligerent though - if it were me I'd park parallel, using the centre line between the spaces as a guide in the middle of my rear view mirror biggrin

You know, now that some f-tard on the internet points it out to me I guess it is pretty silly of me to be concerned about preventing my car from getting dinged and dented. rolleyes

I have to park in a very tight, very crowded (usually double or triple-parked) car park in the city centre for work, so even if I wanted to I couldn't take up 2 spaces! Having seen some of the "dings" that have taken place in this particular car park my approach is to arrive nice and early so I can get a space in the corner, as close to the wall as poss on the passenger's side, so I'm well away from the much tighter central area of the car park (it's an unusual shape so some of the spaces are *very* small and close together) where most of the bumps occur. The only price to pay is that if I want to go out I usually have to wait for others to move!

Has there ever been a ph thread listing safe/friendly parking locations for fussy tts like myself? There's been a few times i've needed to go somewhere and wondered where was the best place not to pick up dings.

Perhaps one of them wiki type pages?

A good idea in theory, but then that will result in our 'safe' parking spaces being stolen by other PHrs!

All I can advise is don't park anywhere in Swansea. Ever.

While it's commendable that you would want to look after it, the extent to which you can be anally retention is hilarious when you consider the subject objectively... I mean, it's hardly like you are driving some sort of one-off, coachbuilt affair...

My shoes are mass produced but for some reason I still avoid puddles and dog st. My iPad is mass produced but I don't drop kick it into the corner when I'm finished. My watch is mass produced but... well you get the point.

Taking pride in ones belongings is not a bad thing, some things are just easier to protect than others.

Lived in Swansea for 5 years, couldn't agree more!!
As for work parking, there's enough room for my 3 colleagues and me to have our combined collection of 13 cars and a tractor all off road. Very handy!

Only one of us has been throwing personal insults around... I would generally consider that to be pretty 'obnoxious' behaviour in the books of most...

Anyway, the point wasn't to highlight how unbelievably defensive you are about your car - it was merely to illuminate you to the fact that we live in an imperfect world, where it is not possible for your VAG platform car to exist in a protective cocoon. The sooner that you are accepting of this, the sooner your blood pressure will return to normal (and you may feel less inclined to swear at strangers on the internet).

To reiterate - this behaviour is that of an absolutely minuscule minority. There is no objective way for you to justify it.

I have done exactly that. I now park wherever i damn well please and couldnt give a fk. It seems to be working well for me thus far.

Why is that relevent?

I'll ask again. Why is that relevent?

There seems to be this 'logic' that if you're driving a common car then you should have some level of acceptance that its going to get damaged. All the comments on here seem to suggest if the cars not expensive or rare then the owner should expect his/her property to be treated like manure. Presumably if it was a Veyron you'd take a different view. You wouldnt accept me coming over to your house and kicking your television so why should you have some level of acceptance to me bashing your car? If i said 'well its not a rare telly, could buy that in any Argos' you wouldnt stand for it.

Perhaps we can put it another way, if you'd like to pay the OP's motoring expenses then im sure he'll park it wherever you want him to. Its funny how it'd very quickly go from 'cheap mass produced rubbish' into 'HOW MUCH?!!?!?' if you were actually paying for it. Its easy to criticise when your wallet stays shut.

And as for me being mental, im sorry i suppose i shouldve taken on the PH mentality of hunting down poor parkers and ripping their heart out with a spoon and feeding it to hounds!

as an aside, in a small carpark near me there is a section where with my Cayenne I can take up 4 spaces, waiting for it to be free just to get a pic for this thread

Well, you've lifted the standard of your trolling a bit.

God, you precious parkers don't half get hormonal. Is there some sort of deep-seated insecurity associated with it?

If you check my profile, I once owned a beautiful, clean Mk2 Golf GTi - a geniune, appreciating, modern classic. It was dwindling in numbers, and more so in numbers in anything resembling its condition.
I bought it for this very reason - and coveted it to the extent of washing and waxing regularly (something I had never done with any car before, or since).

Should this mean that I would sweat bullets every time a trip to the local supermarket was on the horizon?
Should this mean that I would spend my Saturday afternoons endlessly circling town-centre multi-storey carparks; before leaving, unsatisfied, and parking in an empty trading estate on the outskirts of town?
Should this mean that every time I came back to my car in a public carpark, I would voraciously inspect the flanks, hoping in vain that there would not be anything to warrant a huge rant about "the general public" and "selfish w*nkers" on PH?

No. I just used it, drove it, and enjoyed it - like a normal person. You should try it - I'm sure it would feel like a breath of fresh air...
