I'd go with shed. The date doesn't match the numberplate (Jan vs March), so that's battery off job, maybe to reset something?
Unbelievable paranoia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Could also be the US date format. 1st April.

FAO those who purchased their barges at a young age. What sort of reaction did / do you get from friends / family / public?
10 year old XJ at 20 (X300 shape in 2005, so it was, in most people's eyes, the shape which had stopped 3 years previously). Family thought I was nuts buying an old banger which would ruin me in minutes. Friends thought I'd got to the pipe-and-slippers stage 40 years early (but loved travelling in it). Everyone else thought I'd nicked it.

I bought my 530i at 4 years old when I was 22. Family reaction (Well, Dad) was 'Sure you don't want a 540i?'. Not really sure what people at work thought - I was on a 1 year placement from Uni at the time. Mind you I still get comments which imply people think its expensive when we all know what a 10 year old E39 is worth now. Nobody seems to realise how old these cars are now unless they are into cars. When I went back to Uni with it nobody seemed that bothered at all. It was a car - mind you this is the same group of people who initially thought my previous car - a Mk2 Mondeo - was posh because it had leather so cars were not really on the radar.TopGear7 said:

Not that this is going to effect my decision in any way. I'm just intrigued.
I know of someone at uni who at 22 sold their Fiesta for 5k and bought themselves an XK (at pretty much the same price) and a lot of people thought he'd won the lottery / started pushing drugs etc etc - it's quite funny how little people know about car values.
This made me ponder when running a Corsa/Fiesta/Saxo became the norm? Not that this is going to effect my decision in any way. I'm just intrigued.

Back when was 17 you ran cheap cars, size wasn't really considered a major factor. Barges were virtually unheard of but mainly due to lack of availability. Cortinas and family size cars were pretty common, the actual "average" car was probably a Marina due to their low cost/high availability (unfortunately highly c**p as well).
I guess "performance" cars where more unusual. I ran a 1.6 MK2 Escort at school which was a bit unusual, when I bought a Cavalier SRi just before I finished Uni people refused to believe it was mine (it was cheaper to insure than the equivalant Astra GTE by some margin).
EDIT - I wonder if there is a link to the decline of home spannering? When I was 17-25 the expectation was you fixed your cars at home or your dad did. I spent more hours working on others Marina's than my own cars. Working for an engineering company meant that many of the youngster ran tasty stuff, the only barge I can recall was one of the girls who ran a Rover P6. Imps and MGB's in various states of tune/rust abounded (this was late 80's early 90's).
EDIT EDIT - Just looked at the 530i Tourings posted, is it my imagination or have E39 values fallen heavily since last November when I bought mine, I don't think you'd have got a 530 touring from a dealer of that type of age/mileage for anywhere near that money then (nearer £4K I'd have said).

I had my XJ40 4.0 Sov at 20, whilst at Uni. No one was surprised, it just elicited much rolling of eyes. Then when they had been in it, they all fell in love, especially the lady folk. Not that this is going to effect my decision in any way. I'm just intrigued.

A few refused to believe I'd paid so little for it and the reactions I received from the custom paint job were much similar to that of Marmite.
I loved that car. I miss it.

There have been AWD versions of the last several 3ers and 5ers in LHD.
You can also order an ALPINA B7 Allrad in LHD. A B7 Allrad Touring would have me checking down the back of the sofa with great diligence...

Thats cheap enough that if its a goodun it won't need to sit around for weeks attracting the right buyer. If its been for sale a while you have to wonder whats putting everyone who sees it off
Indeed. Is grey leather generally unpopular? I prefer black but may have gone for that if it had Isofix. That 530 has dissappeared of AT so probably sold!

Mines fine after 11yrs..... Just about to hit 100k
Wears better than beige
Now I tend to find black goes shinny
Let's face it, at this age/mileage you can't get too hung up on exterior, never mind interior, take em as you fund em!
The black in my car has gond shiny in it's 117k miles in places so I've ordered up some colourant and other products from here:Wears better than beige

I'm assured that this will get it back up to scratch. I'll post before and after pics. I've gone big on it so I can do the whole damn car. Repeatedly.

330i estate with high miles but cheap and looks well cared for. For the money and MOT it could be a decent gamble.
I didn't know the tailgates did this

Well we have survived without ISOFIX on my ATR, Josephs chair has simply been connected with the seatbelt going through the back of the chair. That worked for his maxicosy baby chair and his front facing chair. Is there lots of evidence that a ISOFIX seat is any better then a well fitted traditional seat?
That 530 has dissappeared of AT so probably sold!
It's more convenience than anything. We have an isofix base secured to the car and the maxi-cosi clicks off/on to it. Using isofix connectors we can easily swap the base around the fleet in seconds including the grandparents, and there's zero danger of them fking it up That 530 has dissappeared of AT so probably sold!

For that money, that is disposable. I think there was someone on the BWM section trying to sell a newer version of this for £3k, I did try to find it but couldn't. How solid are these 3 series tourings? They seem to be not the largest of cars internally.330i estate with high miles but cheap and looks well cared for. It's a while since I had a 3-series, and Mrs CdeG has the current 5-series and is away at the moment so I can't check, but I think it's hydraulic. Certainly very light and easy to operate, and ideal for just popping stuff into the boot.
I think the Volvo XC90 - very different car, I know - has them. They're a good idea when the boot/tailgate is a heavy old thing.
Camp David - ETA that I was clearly talking about the Tourer tailgate rather than a normal boot lid.
