RE: EU to outlaw noisy cars?
Discussion
On my journey home i noted that almost exactly none of the cars i saw were anything that i wanted to hear
I live within 5 miles of the A90 and it is the only thing that i can here as we are in the middle of the countryside
I really don't want car to be any louder and anyone who wants to hear the hideous drone of a modern car more really needs their head examined

So if noise kills why arn't all F1 teams and airport ground crews falling like flies?
Does this mean that if I keep going to Goodwood FOS my liver is going to pack up?
What a load of f**king b*****ks. Like others have said surely there are 1001 more inportant things these useless cretins should be focusing on.

I both own a V8 w/a Tubi system on it, and live on a busy seafront road.
Me & the missus pop up like meerkats whenever something that sounds good drives by, and the only irritating noises are the aformentioned kids with souped-up shopping cars and BLOODY MIDDLE AGED MEN ON HARLEYS blipping them at the lights!
Most large capacity, multi cylindered engines make a good noise, esp. when amplified. Most hatchbacks/motorcycles do not.
Both categories that fall outside these proposals.
Agree with this. i like the sound of a decent engine, but I do not like having to listen to a 1.2 Corsa redlining it up the road. Some bike exhausts are nothing short of unsociably loud and I wouldn't shed any tears if they were bannedMe & the missus pop up like meerkats whenever something that sounds good drives by, and the only irritating noises are the aformentioned kids with souped-up shopping cars and BLOODY MIDDLE AGED MEN ON HARLEYS blipping them at the lights!

It's fashion. I personally like a very quiet car, that goes like crap! A pedestrian has to Stop! Look! and Listen! just as that old crayon box said in Grade 1. It's not my problem if he doesn't do any of those things, and gets run over.
It's kind of strange, after many years away from the car scene, to see that there is a firm conservatism in the culture: ie. environmentalists are bad; noisy, oil burning/spilling, 19th century technology is good etc. I have been surprised to see that things are as they are, and that a different generation has taken on the old attitudes. I am not arguing the role of the EU in your lives; that is a different subject.

The best sounding cars for me have a subtle warble or thrum, and go like lightning.
That is one thing I like about the Bugatti Veyron, more of a whooshing sound with a subtle rumble in the background (well, going by vids/tv).I agree that 68dB is unreasonably low, most cars are noisier than that inside the car at motorway speeds.
Surely other vehicle noises are just as bad/worse. The site I work on at the moment is half a mile from the M8, and 4 miles from Glasgow Airport. Even above the construction noises, the loudest are the planes accelerating along the runway for takeoff.

Meh, I'm sure the manufacturers will find a way around it.
As long as this potential legislation doesn't apply to older cars, then I'm not particularly bothered. I can't imagine what the EU would make of my Tiv with 106db at 4,000rpm...
The thing is though, that is just antisocially loud and exactly the reason such measures are being brought in. I'm all for a good sounding v8 but there is acceptable loud, then silly loud, yours falls into the one bad apple ruining it for the rest of us loud.As long as this potential legislation doesn't apply to older cars, then I'm not particularly bothered. I'd very much doubt the sound any Tiv from the factory was ever 106db at 4000rpm and certainly none of the v6's. 106db simply does not sound good.
Just as years ago bikers brought it upon themselves with noise limits/after market cans....

I disagree, a nice V8 noise, however loud, is always welcome. Nasty scooters, buses and subcontinental gangsta Golfs are what I have a problem with.I'd very much doubt the sound any Tiv from the factory was ever 106db at 4000rpm and certainly none of the v6's. 106db simply does not sound good.

I totally agree with the 'make electric cars louder' bit. A Prius reversed out of a driveway whilst I was out for a run the other evening and I nearly ran straight into the side of it. Being too quiet is dangerous, whereas being a bit loud on full chat occasionally shouldn't hurt anyone.
Yeah, I was out running the other night too, and ran straight into a brick wall! It should have been fitted with warning sirens and flashing lights, it was a bloody danger.Ok, perhaps it was the driver who was at fault. She was reversing briskly enough from behind a tall wall, across a pavement, in a silent car with no exhaust smoke. There was nothing to give the game away. At least with 99% of cars, you can pick out the noise or see the exhaust gases, even if the driver can't see you, then you can be prepared for it to move. This is all aside from the point that I'm a pedestrian using the pavement, she should give way to me.
I would be interested to know how the Veyron would perform in this test compared to a bunch of other supercars.
I've never thought of the Veyron as loud but it certainly has plenty of character, and most importantly it sounds very natural (if the sound of something that appears to be trying to suck all the air in the universe into it could ever be described as natural).
