We bemoan the coverage now, but back in the day the RAC Rally was the only event covered.
I'm sure the all the British Open Rally Championship rounds were covered, as were World Championship rounds and other things like the Mobil 1 Rally Challenge and the rallysprint. Used to be on Youtube but not seen them recently. Essential lunchtime viewing on Grandstand back in 89/90

Still go over to Mull most years – to me that retains much of the excitement and atmosphere of rallying.
Got to agree with that. Let's hope it continues that way. After 150+ stage miles being separated by 8 seconds - what a rally it was this year.

Except it's not as interesting anymore.
I watched the Wales rally on TV recently, Polos and Fiestas looming. Yes all is good, but the cars were a bit..bland.
No more signature burbles or screams anymore, they sound similar.
No more interesting cars or homologation specials of said interesting cars (you can leave the Hyundai i30 N out of this)
You can't buy said homolgation specials, etc you used to be able to go out and buy an Impreza Turbo and be like McRae)
No super group like Group B, only the same WRC cars
etc etc,
Burns kept Subaru on the ground, if he had not died SWRT may still be here today.
McRae kept the press going.

It was interesting going Mish on slicks with a few moments on Saturday afternoon. After 150+ stage miles being separated by 8 seconds - what a rally it was this year.
Its still a proper old school rally just a shame that gribun is not ran now .
The atmosphere is second to none with the island buzzing for weeks . No where else has that ! Roll on 2017 for "The Best Rally In The World "
The Roger Albert Clark Rally will be returning to the forests in exactly 12 months time.
The new event format will be over 4 days starting on Friday 10th November and finishing on Monday 13th November 2017.
The four day format will cover between 250 to 300 stage miles and will once again become the greatest challenge in rallying in the UK, using forests from around the country.
The entry fee will be in the region of £3,000 or 3,600 Euro’s which can be paid in stages.
The event will be running with subjective route notes and a class structure for those crews who wish to use maps.
For this now biennial event the full format including start, overnight and finish locations with the stages to be used will be announced at Autosport International in January.
Rally Manager Colin Heppenstall said “I lot of people didn't think the event would come back into the motorsport calendar, but the motor club always had the intention of bringing the event back to how it all started back in 2004 and bring the true life back into the traditional RAC Rallies of the 1980’s” Heppenstall continued “The event format will be long stages, long days and a challenge to both the crew and the service personnel and be an event that people look forward to doing and spectating on every two years”
A lot of foreign interest has already been shown in the event and for more updates as they are released please like our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Roger-Albert-Clark-Ral ... 3415765490 and Twitter: @RACrally feeds.

Pretty much anything pre "WRC" spec cars was awesome. Be it Impreza's and Evo's, Escorts, Triumphs, Grp B's, Healeys, Porshces, Ferrari's, Mini's or older. Anything clubman and up.
Modern stuff is just dross and boring. Technically great and fast I'm sure. But I find zero interest or enthusiasm for it.

Recognise the car (ex McRae works HSR) but not the driver... any idea? Guessing 1982.Equivalent these days of seeing a Polo R WRC at full chat against the clock on the 90 right at the bottom of your lane. With the milkman or pissed farmer coming the other way.

Hadn't changed the tyres after a forest rally two weeks earlier.
Yes, it is a shame that they've shortened Gribun - but did you see the carnage in there this year? One car was so high on a rock it looked like they'd need to wait for the tide to come in so they could float it off the rock.
