They look like they have lost the point of the Elise. It should be a track car for the road, not a comfortable sports car.

How does that range plan to bypass the Euro 5 emissions regulations? Surely an independent car manufacturer selling solely sports cars must have to introduce some small eco city car (Aston Cygnet for example)
it depends also a lot what color...its a nice car and member of the rest of the familie.
a new era.

That's a very limited market for the Elise, a sports car is a much better proposition. Caterhams/Westfields/Atoms/Radicals fit the track car for the road profile but are such niche models that will struggle to make money for a larger company.

As for the emissions issue - Lotus-badged Protons perhaps?
It has a limited market, but it has the market to itself. Its a lot more pratical than Caterhams and Radicals etc.

This new design seems to be pushing it in direct competition with a lot of other manufacturers (Porsche Cayman, BMW Z4 etc.) which is taking away what the car is supposed to be about.

Good call on the Protons by the way, forgot about those.

I think their plan is to make money instead of living off Korean welfare.

The *Elise* weighs 1095 kg? Seriously? My little Fiat Barchetta weighs 60 kg less...
And come on, even Lamborghini can get their Sesto Elemento to weigh in at (just) under a tonne...

Don't get me wrong, the cars all look fabulous but what happened to their ethos of "performance through lightweight" ?

Well, it seems as though if anybody can make this outlandish plan work [:dr-evil-style-laugh:], Dany Bahar can. Yoinked from here:

"Dany T. Bahar has been the Chief Executive Officer of Group Lotus plc, (parent company of Lotus Cars Ltd.) since October 1, 2009. Mr. Bahar served as the Head of Global Brand Department of Ferrari S.p.A since June 2007. He served as the Head of Corporate Projects Business in Red Bull GmbH and was responsible for the overall corporate project business development, with emphasis on diversifying the business such as setting up their F1 strategy with Red Bull Racing and ... Scuderia Toro Rosso and the US based Nascar Team operations."

Mmmmmm the Elan stands out for me lick

For those saying the Elise is too heavy at 1095kg. Remember they are going to have to pass the all of the various 2015 safety regulations and appeal to a broader market. Yet thats still 250kg less than a cayman which is impressive.

They all look quite similar, but the Elan pushes buttons for me in a way that the others don't. Its a shame that the next generation Elise will weigh 1095kg, but the fact of the matter is that Lotus need to be able to adapt to the market if they want to be successful, and if this means an introduction of more soundproofing or more creature comforts, then so be it.

I'd rather see Lotus building cars like this than potentially dragging themselves under through sheer bloody mindedness.

Safety regulations? Maybe they should ask Citroen how their four seat four cylinder conventional steel monocoque meets them at 850kg, might be some lessons they could apply to their aluminium and fibreglass two seater?

I would guess that huge glass roof adds a huge amount of weight and substantially raises the centre of gravity.
