bks.

It's a 24, with a high spec, 7 seats and FSH. Some vendors would throw it into a studio after a detail, couple of high contrast pics, before asking 6 large.
but, on the other hand, you can get a later S class for less money.......
Not reliavent though, the S class and the TE have completely different markets.

Woody's right, that TE would be proper dosh at a specialist, provided it's in good shape.
Same sort of thing as a battered old Defender being worth twice as much as a newer Discovery loaded to the tunnels with electrical bork.

E39 M5 Beard Question, when was the facelift on these? Some time in 2001 or earlier?

Basically, yes.

I sold my (quite) borked one for €1250 inside 3 days - thats with the least preferable engine, multiple problems listed and without soft close. It did however have a lot of new parts and very good wheels.
Interesting, so with soft close, the 5L engine, decent wheels and tyres and various other new bits what would be a likely price?

What's a good BMW magazine to be reading then?
BMW Car works for me. Performance BMW is considerably more Barryist.
BMW Car for nice articles, Total BMW for more practical "how to" pieces. Problem is after a while they do tend to repeat themselves so I end up reading it in Smiths then buying it only if it contains something new. BMW Car is more aspirational.

Much as I like my E39, I'm thinking an E34 would have been more home spannering friendly, I might (just might) try to swap to an E34 next year (or buy an E30 again as that would fit in my garage).

Since I have nowhere to do any home spannering, (and even less skill,) BMW Car it is then!

Thanks!

A couple of tasty Munich offerings although the first one is pushing "barge" a little bit (well, alot but it is tidy)

What is the 520i like in spanish form performance wise?

I am hankering after an E34 now, they do seem to be quite cheap lick

They did.

My old man had a spanish 520i Touring, 1994 facelift. IIRC that straight six was 150bhp, and a sweet engine it was too. I used to use to take my stuff to uni!

150 German ponies.

E39 M5 facelift was 2001 model year built vehicles, which overlaps calendar years. It's last 1/3 of 2000 onwards, so the earliest are 2000X reg, although as ever, there may have been some 2000MY late registered vehicles.

With the M50 24 valve engine and a manual gearbox, they're fine for normal use but can feel lethargic with an auto.

With the M20 12 valve engine, they're pretty slow, full stop.

They did, slightly less power than the M20 520i, but similar torque (think it was 1 lb ft more) and is similarly tepid and to me, much more unseemly as a coarse four pot rather than a silky (if gutless) six.

Looking at the older M20 cars, I'd not go lower than a 170bhp 525i, but the M30 530i/535i (190 & 211 ponies respectively, a few more without a cat) barely cost any more to fuel or maintain and feel much more appropriate.

Best all rounder in my book is the 24v 525i in manual guise, although the auto doesn't suffer unduly either. For performance, I'd skip the 218bhp M60 V8 530i and opt for the 286bhp 540i

spot on. though around town, the M30 535i (in my experience) DOES cost quite a bit more in fuel than the M50 2.5.

It has a wonderful well to do old lady since new air to it. I love that whoever ordered it splashed out untold £££ ticking air-con, autobox and mettalic paint but left rolly-polly windows! thumbup

Another if it wasn't so oop north!
