Its not really trail braking, as he's very rarely braking, in his description he says Ao48 stickies on the front & when we saw the car it indeed had 48s on the front (pos on wider wheels) & regular road rubber on the rear, that explains its frisky cornering.

It would be interesting to see what he could get out of a car with double the power

Similar gutted-out honda civic perhaps

I'd imagine he'd get a large bill for Armco replacement... at the very least :-)

Have shown this video to 6 people since yesterday, all are in awe of his commitment.

Agreed that's the thing it's a slow car being driven fast and pretty much perfectly too. Which is all the more impressive than a fast car being driven slow. This is a text book example of how momentum is king. As for the braking i was just about uninstall a racing game from my phone because you can get most of the way around a track without needing to touch the brakes. This guy has proved it is actually realistic....

That's French driving for you. wink

Very emotional at the end seeing the pics and the struggle to get there.

He must be chuffed now though. I'd love to meet the guy and shake his hand.

Dear PH,

Can you track this guy down and do a proper article on him? He sums up the PH spirit. May have to dust off your GCSE French, but I think it will be worth it. This guy is special.

After seeing plenty of crappy old French cars (in France) driving at breakneck speeds, I was slightly surprised to see that this guy wasn't smoking a cigarette and didn't have a dog flying around loose in the back, all whilst on the phone! Standard procedure in some areas!

The corner speed that thing carries with the little slides as the back gets really light under massive amounts of trail braking is fantastic to watch. It's also hilarious when he carries so much speed in and then has to floor it immediately every time the car settles as he has so little acceleration available. The guy knows what he's doing! It's a great advert for trail braking, dreams, persistence, and knowing a circuit well. I don't think anybody can really criticise this guy and what he's achieved. Even though the car is very slow it's even a good video to watch. I'm going to watch it a second time now!

Come on. This is PH. Of course there is criticism...

Ax Gt was brilliant little car. used to race one.
This diesel is smoking like its had the fuel pump wound up to the max ie not 54 bhp anymore.
And lack of helmet or roll cage says person driving it is an idiot.

Those memories you may have of ragging your first ever car after you pass your test, be it a crappy old 1litre or something close, I bet they flowed back watching this vid smile

Now I need to convince everyone i know to buy an early 90's 1litre hatchback and take it around the ring at the same time smile

I just wonder what would everyone would be saying if he had planted it (and himself) badly...

in a tin can with no cage, no helmet, harness etc whilst driving like there was no tomorrow, oh and repeatedly timing his laps

This is what PH is all about.
Ironically I bet he isn't a PHer though.
That's what I thought.

I find it superb that this guy is described as a legend with great car skills which shows that there are enough PH members who can appreciate this sort of achievement.

I dare say if he had started a thread with "im building a car to do sub 10min at the ring" and proceeded to post a picture of his AX diesel people here would have ripped him to shreds and told him he should have bought a MX5 so it probably for the best that he just went off and did what he wanted to do!

Absolutely bossed it. Hats off to this man, I would never have the balls to drive that hard on the ring in an AX!

It's a Citroen AX. If you want oversteer all you have to do is turn the wheel a bit and think about lifting off. It knows.

hehe I can remember me and a mate following each other back from our Saturday job, just after we'd passed our tests, both in Mk1 Fiestas. Him in his mum's 950 and me with the colossal 150cc power advantage of my 1.1. What we didn't find out about understeer wasn't worth knowing. And no one ended up in a ditch/hedge. Happy days.
