I listened as carefully as I could but heard no hint of engines over the general kerfuffle...what powers show cars? Temporary battery packs?

For those saying the Elise is too heavy at 1095kg. Remember they are going to have to pass the all of the various 2015 safety regulations and appeal to a broader market.
Safety regulations? Maybe they should ask Citroen how their four seat four cylinder conventional steel monocoque meets them at 850kg, might be some lessons they could apply to their aluminium and fibreglass two seater?
Do you want the new Elise to look and go like a Citroen C1?

No, but I'd be happy for it to crash as well as one, and I don't need it to have space for rear passengers.

Can someone explain to me how the Elan and the Evora are going to sit together in the range?

oh, I see - one is a mid-engined 2+2 sports car and the other is a .........er.........!? Oh, perhaps I don't see.

And just as the concept of low weight, low carbon footprint and relatively low speed driving thrills really comes in to vogue as a result of environmental concerns and the "age of austerity" where conspicuous consumption is frowned upon, Lotus decide to give the car that for much of its life (and the majority of its sales) has been powered by engines with 115bhp to 160-odd bhp a makeover with a 300bhp motor! It's like they are going to join the German marques bhp wars 10 years late.

New Esprit - fair enough, front engined GT again, I can see the point. The Elise should be a relatively low powered, tactile delight, why not put the effort in to making it the 50 or 60 mpg sports car?

The only saving grace is, this is Lotus, so if one of them actually ever goes on sale it will be a miracle!
I agree. I can see why they want to capitalize on the Lotus name by moving upmarket. It will be risky. When Aston was relaunched by Ford they worked heavily on the so called DNA, what used to be called heritage, and decided not to make certain vehicles (such as a small mid engined Ferrari competitor). Lotus DNA is "add lightness." Lotus lightness ought to be very trendy. Do more with less. These cars could be super Lexuses to my mind. Nothing wrong with that, not Lotus enough for me, though.

Fan-bloody-tastic, I wish Lotus all the best with getting these to the market. The Enterne is a real Rapide/Quattroporte chaser and I love it.

Get the handling right and don't scrimp on the interior materials and you'll be on to a winner Lotus. smile

I must however, be skeptical over these proposed deadlines they've laid down. Rolling out as good as one premium automotive product per year as well as making sure they work properly, from a small firm who until now were used to one product every ten years is a BIG ask, I think we should be adding at least another year to all of these deadlines.

They look like they have lost the point of the Elise. It should be a track car for the road, not a comfortable sports car.

How does that range plan to bypass the Euro 5 emissions regulations? Surely an independent car manufacturer selling solely sports cars must have to introduce some small eco city car (Aston Cygnet for example)
I think their plan is to make money instead of living off Korean welfare.
Whats Korea got to do with it??
Korea = Proton = Lotus
Proton is Malaysian, big big difference.
I think their plan is to make money instead of living off Malaysian welfare.

I see what you mean, it's a massive almost unrecognisable difference biggrin

Nice to see James May has the power to change our language wink
Thats 80´s northern vernacular, so WTF has that to do with Queens lead guitarist?
Get your facts straight.
PMSL Irony? Aren't you referring to one BRIAN May?
biglaugh
It was Brian May who drove the Elite out at last nights launch conference, how's that for irony!

Re the Elites roof. look on the Lotus website, there is a video of the Elite dropping its roof on there.
Well batter my balls and call me Susan.

I can see it in the video, but i still think you must be left with zero boot space. There just isn't the space in the back of that car to store it, and 2 seats in the back.

Also - the computer graphics looked very Gran Turismo 5 in that video, i wonder if the new cars will be in it as concepts?
Yup will probably eat into boot space, looks a long car though so there should be a fair bit.

Susan, would you like Tempura batter on your love spuds? I hear it's all the rage these days.
I'm intruiged. The video cut out on me after about 20 minutes (at the Eterne unveiling). All I saw was the roof on the Elite sliding down the C-pillar a touch, then cutting to it fully folded away. Was there more shown afterwards? Call me cynical (rather than Susan tongue out), but I'll believe it when I see all of it! boxedin
My guess is that the longest piece slides partly under the small shelf behind the rear headrests. Then, I suppose it might fit. The video doesn't show the whole movement, I don't know why they thought it a good idea not to.

The way this is suggested is that all of these cars are built on the platform that is underneath the Evora. If that's the case then it's an absolute masterstroke by Lotus, since all they'll be doing for the three mid engined cars is bolting the new engines in and then putting the different non load bearing panels on top. I'm not sure how much more work the front engined ones will be, but again they'll be designed around the same architecture to save effort which will cut the work right down.

Because it doesn't exist and no one could explain how it is going to work to the kid making the crap CGI video as they haven't worked it out themselves.

They are quite unequivocal that the will all be separate and distinct with no parts sharing!!

That's what makes it so difficult to swallow, 5 totally new cars in 5 years!

Bold is the polite version.

Esprit, Elite, Elan, Elise, Eterne ... oh and what about Exige and Evora?

Large lineup, for a small company. I like the idea, but hope they found a way of producing it in a cost efficient way. And for god sake, keep the entry level Elise at a sensible price!

I'm assuming the Elan will be the Evora replacement, the Exige, 2-11 and Exos will be the "niche" part of the brand.

To be honest, the more i look at it, the Elan is the car to get, it looks damn sexy and has the performance to boot. If you want the Esprit, but don't want to spend the £100k+, that is the car, my money is on the Elise starting at early £30k, with the Elan at £60k and the other models as previously stated, Elite £115k, Esprit £120k and the Eterne being the flagship at around £150k.

A step in the right direction in my opinion, a great design direction and definitely a company to watch over the next 5 years. I don't dislike any of those designs, as a previous Esprit owner, this is what I've been waiting for, whether it be Elan or Esprit, probably the former for me i think.

It's all a bit Aston Martin . . . make the whole range look the same.

They all look like they could be a new version of the Honda NSX.

Elite is the best of the bunch for me . . . but preferd the 2012 Esprit when it was going to look more like this:
