I don't think different colour combo's look childish as such. It just appears as though there is a bit of enjoyment in what the individual is doing to his particular car along the lines of customisation. Some just pull it off better than others. Their money and all that.

The angle of the Subaru on the green wheels looks good there but I'd imagine that in reality it wouldn't look as appealing. The Rex above definitely looks good though.

Spot on! That silver RX8 is a mismatch of bits that look good on other cars... and far from gorgeous.
