This happened at the company I used to work for, it was an Iveco truck. Apparently a solenoid got stuck (or something) and caused a fire, this was about 6 hours after it was parked up.

I am Pretty sure BMW did a recall many years ago on the E46's due to a faulty electric fan switch? There were i believe a few instances of fans staying on and catching fire.....

God this is such an Americanised thread: "parking lots" and "checks".

Car parks and cheques would be nicer.

Complaints for the use of "checks" instead of the correct "Cheques" should be made to Apple inc. 1-6 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California smile

I'd go for wiring, had a 04 plate BM go up all on it's own on the back of me recovery truck once, fire brigade said it's a common thing something to do with the window switches buring out cos the window relays stick?
Twas a fe wyears ago and TBH i was more concerned about saving my truck than the motor on the back.

Almost certainly an electrical/wiring fault.

Two friends have had this.

One was a bodged immobilizer - started a fire while he was driving along... he actually called me:

"Hi, there's smoke coming from out of the dash, what should I do ?"

"Stop, turn it off and get the hell out !"

Another was a wire that some genius had installed years before and wrapped it around a screw. After several years of vibration it cut through the insulation and it caught fire when parked up.

Can't believe people are burning some good cars these days just to get insurance money, it's all wrong.

... a few days ago, my car burnt down in a private gated parking lot. It happened a few minutes after I parked it there, and went away. How can this happen? The fire didn't start in the engine (the front half was untouched by the fire), and it also didn't start at the battery (in the back, no damage there). Look at some more pictures here...
You tried to use the indicators, didn't you?

+1 on that thought.
We had one burn out at BCA a few years ago. Most likely cause was a badly wired monster sound system, direct to the battery without a fuse. The back end was destroyed.

He's in Germany, even inflating your blow up doll via the cigarette lighter isn't considered dodgy !

I bought my Astra van off a salvage co. with fire damage from an unknown starting point, some years later early one morning the alternator light came on & the power steering stopped working. I carried on home thinking that the alternator had given up which I was going to check once it got light, about 30 minutes later as it was becoming light I looked out through a window & saw smoke billowing from the sides around my bonnet.

Armed with a fire extinguisher I ran out & sprayed it through the rad grill & from underneath before opening the bonnet, I was lucky & all that was glowing red was the sound proofing material along the firewall but my electric power steering pump where the fire started was toast. Another few minutes & I think the flames may have really got a hold & my whole van would have been toast.

Range rover P38 DHSE
Wife parks it on the drive, comes into house, stood in Kitchen having a glass of wine, looks out of the window, flames and smoke coming from under the bonnet. Alternator by all accounts. Know fault just not accepted by Land Rover. cost the insurance co. over £5k to put right (Wiring loom, FIP etc. etc.)

My thinking too. Our Citroen BX did just this in Bradford one day when my mum was out shopping. Simply caught on fire and burned itself to bits - faulty electrics were the diagnosis (anyone surprised about that!?!)
