RE: PH Blog: the new Porsche 911
Discussion
"plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose" (The more it changes, the more it’s the same thing.) An epigram by French critic, journalist, and novelist, Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr, in the January 1849 issue of his journal Les Guêpes (“The Wasps”) perfectly describes the 991 Porsche 911.
I know people always say 911's don't change blah blah blah. Looking from a 993 to the new 991 i'd say there is quite a difference. Previous porches have always had a fairly short length and high roof line and i think the dramatic plunge at the rear into the shapely rear arches is what i like so much about them. 993 is my favorite by a mile and every Porsche since seems to be diminishing this characteristic. The 991 is a great looking car imo, just starting to feel like its losing its identity. The silhouette of this car reminds me more of the cayman with its long and low rear. I'd still love one though if someones got a spare 100k to throw my way.
Having owned/dealt with each generation of 911, i must admit the 991 does exactly nothing to even raise any interest for me. I'm off to Germany this week to test the new car, but i'm more excited about seeing some old friends & some old Porsches than the new one. Shame Although i do have some time with a 73 RS promised to me Every cloud........

There wasn't a 998.
I think its because Ducati had a 998, 999 ..... and so on.....
Peugeot has the same problem:I think its because Ducati had a 998, 999 ..... and so on.....
201 202 203 204 205 206 404 405 504 505 506 and so on
and they suddenly made a
1004 (is it or something like that - I'm not at all interested in Peugeots!).
Porsche made a 904 GTS
and had to change it into 914 GTS
because Peugeot wanted the "O" in the middle
an old habit dating back to when their badge was pierced by the crank lever hole.

I should think that
BY NOW
everybody
must be familiar with the bland sports-Volkswagen squashed-beetle shape!
Driving one, owning one and enjoying one across the roads of europe is great fun though...BY NOW

and for a car that does >180 mph and <5.0 sec for the sprint is hardly bland..... especially
for the money..... Hit the Sport button and if you have any idea of how to drive, the thing can
be mega....
Please show me a current car that hits these performance figures, has all that a 911 has to offer
for the money (new or pre owned), and I'll go and test drive one........

BUT it is forbidden everywhere; even in Germany, you may go fast sometimes, but where it is limited, penalties are dreadful!
So, O.K. Porsches are exciting to drive
(although I've always been told that one has to learn to drive one, because a beginner will send it in the ditch immediately)
but as speed is limited, only the looks count today...
And for the looks, the 911 really is rather bland; the front is so "closed", inexpressive.
(the only holes were the ugly ones copied from the Ferrari 360).
I confess that I do admire the Carrera GT.

I didn't say I speed. Bouncing a cheque is illegal too......BUT it is forbidden everywhere; even in Germany, you may go fast sometimes, but where it is limited, penalties are dreadful!

Why do manufacturers of many differing brands still sell so many 'performance' cars?
You don't have to max it .. to enjoy it.....
You're so wrong about only the looks count ......
I'd say exactly the opposite, customers of the aforementioned type of car are much more
savvy than previous years, and thus, quality, handling, noise, build, desirability all come
into the mix.....
Holes slow cars down and decrease the overall drag Coefficient........
Your arguments or comments dont really stack up at all.....

In 1961 Porsche also tried to call one of their new models the 901, but Peugeot stepped in again, and hence the 911 was born...and had to change it into 914 GTS

But I do wonder how so many fast cars are still being built... and sold.
The latest McLaren sounds amazing, but when you hear people on TV... they find a Kia expensive!
Life is becoming hard for so many. Will there be enough ready-to-spend-a-lot-of-money chaps left to permit factories to keep on making fantastic cars...
'Pity holes slow down... I like vents, air-intakes, scoops, snorkels, ducts...! Far more than wings, aerofoils, spoilers...
