RE: Full details: New Mercedes SL

Think it'll be one for the flesh. Thought the E-Class Coupe looked a bit heavy in photos, looks fantastic in real life. I'm sure it's those 'moody' press shots they do.
Really impressive package IMO.
What I genuinely don't understand is why they extend the 'design language' (or whatever they want to call it) all the way through the range. It dilutes the SLS AMG, surely, as the interior/exterior styling is so heavily borrowed by other models that it doesn't look like a standalone model. That interior would annoy me rather a lot of I'd just dropped 180k on their best sports car.

Because they make more money tempting buyers out of 3-series into C-Class Sports with SLS styling cues than they do by selling SLS's.Dr Interceptor said:

Don't get me wrong, I know the real financial reason (and it does look great), it's just one of those occasions where they hit a bum note and scratch their heads wondering why they don't sell as many equivalents as their rivals (see also: Maybach). Just a couple of fundamentals people expect in that price bracket that aren't there, not enough uniqueness. It looks a lot better in these pictures than it did in the leaked brochure shots posted earlier this week. However, to my eye it is still inelegant, bloated and extraordinarily aggressive in its styling. It should be light, filigree and graceful.
The figures for the V6 are quite amazing. The power of the V8 likewise. I do hope they don't put a diesel in it. If you can't afford a petrol-engined SL, you can't afford a SL. I write as one who can't afford either.

Seriously impressive power figures from the SL500. 486hp.
Unless I'm misreading it, says 435 I think - still impressive though and 'sufficient' for most mere mortals - the 350 now makes as much as Merc 5.0 V8s did not so very long ago and used a hell of a lot more fuel.I doubt there'll be any sense of disappointment with the styling with potential and probably mostly repeat brand new SL Customers. Must have been a difficult call for Merc, keep the Customers happy or people who like talking/moaning about it who mainly couldn't afford it anyway.
