RE: PH Blog: noise matters

I agree...we are perilously close to losing 'proper'noise if the EU had their way. I applaud Garlick & all the PHers for educating the next generation on some of the great car noises that we grew up with that would otherwise become extinct. It gives you a good feeling when 'yoofs' give you the as you pass them in a car making a proper noise
The TVR V8's and the old Jaguar V12 on an e-Type are so distinive on the road, difficult to beat.
Slightly off beat but it's an engine sound all the same. You can't beat the sound of a Merlin engine on song. Clip doesn't do it justice.

Also gave rise to one of the funniest You Tube clips I've seen.

I'm a sensible chap with a sensible job and Ive just bought my third V6 Alfa. (before anyone shouts Newbie I was a member previously but couldnt remember my logins after a period away). The first thing I thought when I got behind the wheel of the Alfa was what a lovely noise it makes from behind the wheel, but when listening to my wife pull away I was struck how quiet it was!! It needs to be heard. My 164 Cloverleaf sounded fantastic, the 156 rather dull.
So Ive ordered a JTD centre section as it comes without central silencer. We'll see... PH 'noise matters'.

+1 for the MX5s
with a sensibleish exhaust and filter swap the whole thing breaths easier and sounds perfect for its looks, little raspy, nice pop on a shortshift and find the carpet and the airfilter trys to suck burberry caps off the youts at the corner shop
the induction sound of a teggy type r as it winds up to impossible rpms is quite a hairs on the neck sound, and risking sounding too boyracery.. the wwhaarrrrp...psshhhtt... bang!!!! of my rs turbo as it flame grilled moped riders was a memorable sound

God yes! my current VX, while failry vocal is, at the end of the day, just a 4cyl boggo engine, sounds fairly nice, but lacks any real character.
My old 5 pot Bravo HGT on the other hand was something else, so little matched the noise to the £ ratio for me and i still hanker after another now
Not a great video, but gives a bit of an idea of how a £1000 car can sound http://s228.photobucket.com/albums/ee76/andyb76/br...

About 15 years ago, I took my sons to Tower Bridge early one Sunday morning for the start of a classic rally. Weird mix of competing cars including a pre-war Lagonda parked next to Minor 1000. Also a delightfully noisy Fiat/Abarth 500 (the original shape). But our abiding memory of that morning was a red italian coupe which kept driving back and forth - the most amazing V8 rumble! I think it was a Ferrari but might have been a Maserati - will have to dig out the old photos to check!
My Mk5 GTi sounds much better (from the driver's seat) with the rear seats folded down...

Had a Bravo HGT and have to agree. Its what made me choose this over any other warm/hottish hatch in 1998.My old 5 pot Bravo HGT on the other hand was something else, so little matched the noise to the £ ratio for me and i still hanker after another now

I've got to say I agree on the noise front.
I got immense satisfaction from driving my Porsche 924 hard, not because it was going quickly (it wasn't), but because the severely patched exhaust made me feel like I was driving a group B rally car. I still remember starting it up the first time after renovating it, and both me and my father laughing like little boys. Given the performance of modern cars and the various risks associated with driving them anywhere near their limit, getting driving satisfaction at lower speeds is what I'm more interested in. An engaging chassis and an engine note that makes you feel like you're ringing everything it's got to give do this for me.
It's also the noise that lures to any BMW with a large straight 6 that i can't afford to run every time I consider changing cars.
As for the BRZ, I was surprised at the fairly undistinctive sound Toyota's efforts with the boxer made, so I'm hoping Subaru can do better. My Dad drive's a n/a 2.0 boxxer, which although doesn't have the quite the same burble as the turbo cars, still sounds interesting and distinctive.
