182 trouphy is the best of the bunch for me! Evo magazine couldn't rave about it enough although they do go for twice the price of a cup 172 or 182. If your after a more raw driving experience the 172cup is one to go for, my bro has one and its a brilliant car. Had it 4 years and has had very few minor issues with it and has a great community in the cliosport.net. And who said the 106gti would be faster than the 172? wtf lol

106 engine is very revvy and very tunable, I stuck the engine and running gear on an ax and had it remapped and cammed to a healthy 140bhp at the hubs, coupled with the series 1 rallye gearbox it went like stink and great fun.

172 is a better car if youre after something more modern but for out and out driving id take the nimbler and more tunable 106/vts.

Parts are dirt cheap, I paid £20 for a new strut and the market is stacked with parts that young modders are selling after folding up their projects.

What's the budget?

I'm a Renaultsport fanboy, I wouldn't bother with a 182 cup, worst version of the 1*2s. Best versions are 172 cup and 182 Trophy.

Both will be faster and better handling than the others (in standard trim), though I do like both alternatives.

Budget £3k for a nice 172 cup, £6-£7k for a Trophy

One con you missed on the 106 GTI is it has some fairly serious rot issues, particularly the boot floor.

Lots of 106 owners 'upgrade' to a 172/182 and say they miss the 106. Obviously there is a massive power difference but the 106 is a more agile, fun car.

I'd say the 182 is the quickest, the 106 is most fun and the Mk2 is most characterful. Choose whichever one of those matters the most to you as in terms of running costs, practicality, comfort etc they are all much of a muchness.

Judging by the list you're not too fussed over BHP so I'd personally I'd take the 106 GTI.

No one said that.

This isn't strictly true, my Mk2 doesn't have power steering.

I know it's not on your list but the 306 GTi/Rallye suggestions are worth considering. If it were my only car I'd be looking hard at a decent Rallye.

A later 87> mk2 16v ought to have power steering as most people added it to the options list, there are certainly far more 8v GTIs without PAS.

I have to agree though that if it is your only car and you are not handy with spanners then a mk2 golf is not strictly a "turn key" car, due to their age they do require preventative maintenance and what ruins a lot of them is people failing to do even the basics. For this reason I'd agree that the 306 GTI is a more modern MK2 GTI,and should* require less maintenance and will have a few more creature comforts.

(from a long time mk2 golf owner!)

The 306 is a lovely chassis and they can be had for bargain prices now, I was tempted myself before I settled on the clio.
I'll have a look at these.

I don't want to spend more than £3k so I think a 172 Cup would be the Clio of choice.

This is what I'm after, so perhaps the 106 GTi is the answer.
