If going for diesel, something with a mechanical fuel pump is a good idea - if the alternator dies it'll keep running as they don't need a spark. Since you can run them on vegetable oil fuel isn't a problem.

For petrol cars, it's best to find something with a very big engine for the size of the car. It's possible to run a petrol car on wood gas, but it's not very efficient compared to petrol so you would need a pokey engine to get up hills.

The biggest issue in the event of armageddon is going to be tyres - once the rubber starts to decay you'll have real trouble finding new ones. So the actual answer to this question is

When I read your question, I couldn't help think of a zombie apocalypse. So on that note, it would be the solar powered things I seen at a show in the U.S. 90bhp, looks like crap but recharges itself during the day...

I have a zombie MX5. Short of removing it's head or destroying it's brain nothing seems to kill it.

Metal tracks wear out pretty quickly - I wouldn't fancy replacing the bearings and joints on all 4 of those! Tyres can last a long time if they're made the right way. My dad has a 1947 Fordson Major tractor which has tyres from 1949 on it!

I bought a Lexus a couple of years ago. I've not spent 1p on anything going wrong. I aim to keep it running for some time yet.

Or you could buy something simple like a Fiesta. If / when it goes wrong at least it'll be a cheap fix.

Found everywhere in Africa so a good call

As for tyres, most live axled 4x4 tyres last about 40-50k miles. Much less so for non live axled stuff.

amazing to see the estate versions running thru the desert in Egypt with 10 people in and luggage on the roof making the car 2.5 times taller.

50cc Scooter, Think about it, very little to go wrong, when it does easy to work on, they do silly miles to a tank (which costs a tenner).
