Head down to the Chelsea cruise last Saturday of te month you will see five or six similar cars.

Last month there were 4 there along with a few 1500+ bhp road legal yanks.

If you like your hot rods and yank stuff it's te place to see things like this on the road.

Next ones the 25th going to be quite a large event apparently
My suggestion would be to head to the infamous Ace Cafe. On a Wednesday, mid month they have a hot rod night. I'll post a few photos up later... The carpark fills up and there's plenty more cars on the street too.....with the occasional burn out!

Modern cars however are mostly bland, and samey
And besides in good old hot rodding fashion the PT Cruiser is indeed "hot rodded"

Let's not forget that it can carry 8' planks. And the parcel shelf can move.

Oh, and most importantly, the 2.4 litre engine makes 10% more torque than engines it's only 20% bigger than.

Nothing wrong with personal choice, but this is customizing not hotrodding.

Ah, back to hot rods, good!

That looks fantastic mate, got any more pics?

That do you?

Plus side: unique, extrovert, fun, straight line speed, no RFL, cheap insurance.
Minus side: uncomfortable, impractical, thirsty, corners*, noisy. (* 4 foot of tread on the back, 7 inches on the front, there is only going to be one winner!!)

Pluses are much bigger than the minuses. We call it Prozac as it is the best anti-depressant ever.
If you ever see me, give me a shout and I'll take you round the block for a demo!

Thank you S2Mike.

Second week of September, 15/16?, Long Marston Airfield, (Shakespeare County Raceway) is the Hot Rod Drags. There will be hundreds of rods there, most of them better than mine. Well worth it just for the spectacle.

There's a nice blue Model A open I see on nice sunny weekends. Also another Rod, not sure exactly what it is, lives about 2 miles away.

Pops are also fairly common at shows and such. From a couple of weeks ago:

This is rather cool, runs a Jag AJV8

From last year:

This is the one I sometimes see about:

2010:

I haven't seen this one in a couple of years now, although it used to be a regular at many local shows. Runs a Rover V8, always thought it looked rather elegant

Dunno if you count this as "rodded" or only "modded"

How would you define each? As in what's the difference?

I would suggest a hot rod would require significant mechanical changes (probably an engine swap) specifically to make them as fast as possible in a straight line.

Your examples above just look in the majority like styling changes, which is customization. They may have been customized to look like a hot rod, but it doesn't make them one.

Yet how does it make or contribute to it being a terrible car? Lets face it the Pop in you original post was hardly a ground breaking car. Quite mundane really.

ok, so what about these then:

The engine from this one:

I don't fully disagree with what you've said, but the original hot rods in California actually originally ran the standard 4 cylinder engine. A niche group of "purist" rodders don't actually like or believe in hot rods running V8's at all believe it or not.

Also things like the Ford Model B, alla the Milner coupe from American Graffiti, these ran a Ford Flathead V8 as factory fit standard engine. The rodded ones are just running less body work and have upped the power. In ethos as much as many don't like it, it's not really doing anything hugely different to modifying a Citroen Saxo today with more power, shiny bits and less weight.
