however all of these consultations are a waste of time, they go ahead with their plan regardless of public opinion, reasoned debate, logic
So have I though I know it's meaningless now that the crossing is in private ownership.however all of these consultations are a waste of time, they go ahead with their plan regardless of public opinion, reasoned debate, logic
ETA - just checked, apparently the operation of the crossing is contracted to a consortium but the income goes to the goverment so comments will definitely be ignored...

Looks like this is going ahead and that the toll barriers will be scrapped next year.

Following on from one of the comments above about 4 lanes widening to 16 barriers and then going back down to 4 lanes again - I presume they will keep the layout as it is, as well as the actual barriers and just have it the same as when it is free to cross after 10pm I.e. roll up to barrier and wait for it to lift and then drive on?

The whole thing is ludicrous on so many levels.
To begin with, we were told the tolls would only be in effect until the costs of the crossing were paid. Nice one, thanks very much. Despite the fact that it is paid for, rather than stop charging as promised, the toll has actually gone up from £1.50 to £2.00, which is bloody outrageous.
While I'm at it, why can't you pay by card? You can in France, and it's a damn sight quicker than stopping at a booth, even quicker than putting coins in slots - within three seconds you have your card in, the barrier up and your card back. What if I'm sitting on the M25 and suddenly realise I have no cash? Ridiculous.
As for the proposed changes themselves.. Yes. Well done. What on earth makes DfT think this shambles is better than the systems used by any other toll-paying country I've heard of, countries who've had many more years experience and development to get it right? Guess what, it isn't. Pay online in advance of using a road? Jesus Christ.
The surcharges and completely disproportionate fines mark this idea out for what it really is. I'm astonished it's getting through so quietly, with all this "stopping the war on motorists" bullst going around.

Tolls will be gone in Oct 2014, can't happen soon enough!

From that link
Many have called for the charges – which increased from £1.50 to £2 last October with another rise of 50p expected – to be scrapped in their entirety.
The Government, however, says the increase will help pay for the new free-flow technology.
If you scrap the tolls then you don't need to pay for the new free-flow technology. How stupid do they think we are?

My goodness, how much does this stuff cost???
I 95% agree with the notion that the crossing is paid for and should be free.
The 5% of me says that there are special circumstances - tankers and special loads will still need escorting, there is far more to maintaining the tunnel and bridge that any other road, and because it is an A Road cyclists are still carried across for free. This costs £££.
With tolls motorcyclists are let past for free because of the faff of getting change - gloves off, rummage etc etc. Maybe they could be charged under the new regime?
The only major benefit I can see is using French tolls and getting the charge put onto your DART Tag account - no more using credit cards or stretching over the passenger seat.
