RE: Spotted: BMW M3 CS

it's not even a particularly good automatic if it's the same as the DSG they put in the other M3s of that era.
The DCT didn't appear in the M3 until the E9X series.SMG is an automated manual with a single clutch & can be far more violent than DSG/DCT 'boxes.
I'll never forget the savagery of the shifts in my pal's SMG cabrio, with the 'box set to S6...

I'd take a CS over a CSL even if they were the same price. The idea of an automatic M3 just seems wrong to me and it's not even a particularly good automatic if it's the same as the DSG they put in the other M3s of that era.
Being pedantic it's not an automatic but a sequential manual with an automatic mode (that is horrible!). TBH the SMG box isnt that bad. Around town and at slow speeds it is a bit clunky but on track or when driving hard on the road it makes sense. You only need to experience an SMG downshift from high rpm in a CSL to be slightly convinced of its worthkambites said:

I think the mistake here is to view SMG as an automatic. Primarily, it isn't. It does have an automatic function which, I would agree, is woeful. But to view is as an automatic is to miss out on its benefits. The SMG box is a delight on the open road, in flappy paddle manual mode. I took my SMG'd CS down through France and Spain and it was a complete joy on fast flowing country roads.
But as above, if I had another it would be manual.

And then everyone moans that the DCT is too clinical instead, and wants the SMG. Just read the F10 M5 thread!I'll ignore your comments about it being an automatic as I'm not going to bite. However the whole point of the CSL is to make it as fast and track orientated as possible which means SMG is better. I prefer swapping cogs myself too but it wouldn't put me off a CSL if I had the money.

The DCT didn't appear in the M3 until the E9X series.Still each to their own. I know some people like these 'boxes. I'm just glad the M3 was available with both so if I ever need four seats I can buy one.

What a beautifull car the E46 M3's are though. A definate future classic for sure.
I always thought that the CS came with that rear spoiler (which I don't like) the one featured doesn't though, was it optional?http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

I think this is what confuses me; for me "fast" and "track orientated" are completely unrelated. A track is exactly where I want the most interaction from a car; I don't give a damn how fast I'm going unless I'm actually racing. If I was buying a track car I wouldn't even want strong syncromeshes, let alone an automated box. Each to their own, though.

Ha ha - only someone who is trying to sell a CS could type that with a straight face
Ha I'm trying to sell a normal e46 M3 not a CS.I will revise my 98% to 95% but I am sticking to that. As a car the CS is 95% of a CSL.

a csl is a true petrol heads car imo, not exactly the most flashy thing you can buy second hand for £30k+ !
But if you buy a good one, its not far off free motoring, you'll get back pretty much what you pay for it. It's the perfect car Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
