The CAP Code required that marketers must not make speed or acceleration the main message of their marketing communications.
The ASA noted that the claim "Shortens Straights. Straightens Corners" was featured in large text as the main strap-line of the ad. Although we considered that "Straightens Corners" was likely to be seen by readers simply as a claim about the car's handling, we considered that the claim "Shortens Straights" would be interpreted to mean that the car made straight stretches of road shorter by covering them more quickly. We therefore considered that, by making speed the main message, the ad breached the Code and condoned irresponsible driving.
The ad breached CAP Code (Edition 12) rules 1.3 (Social responsibility) and 19.2, 19.3 and 19.4 (Motoring).
It's a 240+bhp car, what do they think people will do with the bloody thing!
What happened to this country?

I hate the latest meme, but this truly is a first world problem.
Latest meme?Social responsibility, what utter bks what about all the casino adverts showing the 37/1 shots flooding in, every pull of the one arm bandit results in a cascading flood of cash, maybe doing something about these ads would come into the category of "doing something useful" which probably contravenes an ASA internal directive!
Never said this before, but I wish we were back in the late eighties/early nineties when the hot hatches and cosworths of this world were celebrated in adverts and aspired to by the general population.
Now, all the drones genuinely aspire to own are the diesel s-line badged washing machines that do the most mpg possible.
Sad, sad times

This.
I have a feeling that ASA must investigate each compalint (whether one person or a thousand) and their verdict is based on analysis of the ad, without weighting per number of complaints.
Yep. Ling Valentine (I know!!!) was having a rant on twitter as someone had reported her De Loreon joke, was pure comedy gold as she posted the complaint and her replies.I have a feeling that ASA must investigate each compalint (whether one person or a thousand) and their verdict is based on analysis of the ad, without weighting per number of complaints.
I've noticed that what some manufacturers seem to be doing to 'get around' the whole advertising crap about 'not making the car look exciting/fun' is to post up videos to Youtube.
Ford's recent video of the ST highlights this perfectly; if this were included in an advert on TV for example, it would be banned...

However, it shows 'testing' and isn't any form of advert. Wink, wink.

Wow. It's not even a video of the car moving and it's banned.
At least other countries still have a sense of fun in their adverts:
(an oldie but a goodie. God bless the Italians)

Do you know the rules governing car ads? Did you read the assessment? If so, it's probably you who should get a grip.
Yes but the rules shouldn't be that way, it's pathetic, it stinks of health and safety bks.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
