Try one of these, easier to drive/manoeuvre than the size suggests, and reliability to

die for. After 8 years and 300,000+ miles in one with just an air con rad and a turbo

Surprised she didn't like it... My 13 year old son fits in the xc90 perfectly and it's very spacious, it's very easy to drive aswell
Yeah, I was suprised too.. (and I was also suprised that its general Volvoness didnt score any points - she's previously "shortened" a V70 and it performed fantastically well with symmetrical crumplage) but installing eldest daughters oversized "special friend" in the rear was unfair.

That'll shift the kids along fairly swiftly!

The Titanium X Sport comes with skirts, big wheels and lots of kit. Easily within your budget:

Picture 7 suggests dodgy engine mountings to me... wink

Lots of votes for S-Max, thanks - will go have a look
Thanks.

Oh I concur completely.

If it were possible for me to have a Brabus Vito dualiner (LWB) for work, AND get an MB approved seat fitter to add 2 more (removable) seats to the back WITHOUT the Vito loosing its "commercial vehicle" classification, then I wouldn't have made the thread as I'd have done that already and be steering her towards a chunky estate with 5seats and a boot > weekly shop.

As the Vito would be coming from a different budget, we'd end up spending (personally) a lot less, and potentially get more use out of my company vehicle - win win. But the numbers dont stack up if it looses its commercial status.

If the 3rd row seats in an XC90 were too small then those in an S-Max will be, too.

Put your pre-conceptions away

Much better made than earlier versions and 2.0 diesel is more refined and also more reliable than the 1.9, and is chain driven, that saves a major headache down the line.

While they are not made for speed they will easily keep up with traffic, and cruise at 90+ I used to get 38mpg out of ours no matter what I did to it.
We had a 2.2dci. When it worked it was terrific, and I drove it non-stop from Somerset to Spain on a number of occasions, but in reliability terms it was an utter catastrophe. The 2.0 is, I'm sure, much better, but I don't know that I'd risk another.

As others have said, Merc R Class LWB. The only vehicle this side of a Chevy Suburban, or a transit minibus that can comfortably fit adult sized people in the third row.

320 CDI 4matic most sensible, R500 or very rare but fabulously bonkers R63 AMG version for V8 silliness.

we have similar requirements; we have the 7 seat V8 diesel Mercedes GL which is fantastic with the full sized rear electric seats which fold flat when not required, and also a Mercedes Vito Sport X Brabus LWB auto which I think is even better especially as it fully loaded inc the super handy electric side doors; as long as it isn't the traveliner vito, the genuine Mercedes 3rd row seats and floor brackets are easy to source on ebay and very easy to fit...I cannot recommend the Vito van highly enough; its just brilliant for a large family, and the remaining 'boot' space when everyone is seated is just cavernous and the Brabus vans look pretty cool for a van...

Maybe worth taking a look at the Mazda 5. I am biased as I have one but they look ok in sport trim. and go ok in 2.0 petrol model. and it is not much bigger than a 5 seater estate. Similar in ratings to the s max but you might get in a newer Mazda at your budget.

Jeep Commander Hemi! Seven seats as standard, big boot when not in use, very comfy and easy to drive but manages to combine some manly stupidity with the family practicality. It has a 5.7l V8 with 322bhp but it's so quiet and smooth that the wife wouldn't even notice if you didn't tell her. Whilst ideal for carting kids and stuff around it is also rather quick and amusing to drive and capable of heavy duty off-roading and dealing with any weather conditions you could possibly encounter in the UK. If fuel economy really isn't much of an issue then that would be my choice, so much cooler than any MPV.

R Class is only 6 seats total, isn't it?

I've had a couple of XC90s and a couple of S-Maxs. The rear seats are not massive, but will be adequate for older children for shorter journeys. They both look good and drive well-enough (the Ford does so rather better) too.

I've said several times on threads like this that I reckon the S-Max is just about the perfect family vehicle. If the image is more important than cost, get the Volvo, but the S-Max would definitely be my recommendation.

I'm fairly sure there's both a 3 seat bench 2nd row making it a 7 seater, or a 2 seat 2nd row "captain's chair" option making 6 seats.

Discovery 3. It fits every point apart from the performance part of number 5, but it counters with great off-road ability that can be just as much fun as going quickly.
