Fog Lights in rain
Discussion
Where are you lot driving where you see fog lights on all the time?
My overriding experience when fog descends is fk all people switch their fogs on. Two days during this last week, driving in thick fog and barely anyone had fog lights switched on, I'd estimate less than 5%. Some didn't have any lights on at all, which is a major trend I tend to see round these parts.

Everywhere. I tend to see it more when people are going to work or coming home and that is generally when the overall IQ of the motorway drops to that of a slug.xRIEx said:

I routinely trudge up and down the M40 at all sorts of bizarre hours, which means I regularly encounter fog dense enough to slow and deploy fog lights. In my experience, most other drivers are sensible with their use of foglights, although few seem to turn them off when another car comes into close proximity, ahead or behind. A few leave them on when it clears; there are just a handful who have no lights on whatsoever if it's day time (in silver or grey cars too!). On each journey in the dark, typically there is at least one person with main beam left on.
YMMV.
And jmorgan is spot on.

Round town? I'd question whether fog lights round town are ever necessary.jmorgan said:
Not really, I get around a bit, extent so far, a line between Penzance and Glasgow/Edinburgh (and further up on occasion) and as far over as Norwich (and further) and West, well Ireland.
Similar area to me, although I only go as far as Falmouth, but up to Perth/Dundee (and like you, further as required), and out to Lowestoft. I don't cover Ireland (or haven't needed to so far).Sensibleboy said:

Round town? I'd question whether fog lights round town are ever necessary. The light switch in my Scirocco is so counter intuitive I never use my fogs because I don't know which is the front and which is the back. 0 does not mean off and the indicator lights in the dash are not clear which is the front and which is the back. How easy would a red graphic for the rears and a white for the front be?
Just driven in heavy rain and counted 3 cars with fog lights on (2 front, 1 rear, the latter being not very bright at all). That's out of a few hundred cars encountered on the journey. 6 had no lights on at all, and about double had sidelights only.
I know I'm in the minority here and anecdotal is no sort of evidence, but I'm really surprised my experience is that different to everyone else's.

'Everywhere' is an exaggeration; I drive a fair few motorway miles, mostly the M1, but I rarely ever see fog lights on (I can't even recall a time so there's never been such an event that has irked me that much), and a massively larger proportion of drivers with no fog lights on in fog than fog lights on in no fog.
I wonder if your experience differs from everyone else's because you're counting a different thing? When it's foggy, I do see cars with fog lights on but I also see a lot of cars with no fog lights on. However, the test for whether you should have your fog lights on is not as simple as, "is it foggy?". Almost all the cars I see with rear fog lights on in fog do not need them on.In most conditions fog lights on don't bother me, what really boils my piss is the many many idiots that have no lights on at all! There should be ANPR cameras on bridges that ping a £60 fixed penalty fine in these conditions to any car with side or no lights on. It's because of this we have DRLs now by law.

I had one yesterday on the M40. Prick in a Focus estate. ~6:30PM, dark, light rain and spray. Doing about 70, passing traffic in L3 at what I thought was a reasonable and responsible speed. Maybe 750m of fairly close-together cars and lorries in L2 so nowhere I could reasonably drop back in.
Tailgating.
Foglights
Sidelights.
Utter mong.
