RE: VW Golf Mk 1: You Know You Want To
Discussion
The best of the Mk1s were the LS / GLS with a rev counter in round sunken dials. The rev counter was the top 180 degrees of one dial, which meant (if you were 17 and didn't really like your valves much) that there was the fun game to play of 'get the rev counter pointing in the fuel gauge'.
Amazing I didn't break the poor thing really.

I do love modified mk1 Golfs when they're done right (faaaar too many ruined), but it's lovely to see one pretty much concourse. I really do hope that this stays standard.
As for people thinking that all people do to these is slam them on BBS RS, weld in a swallowtail rear panel and drive around collecting trophies, how about Andy Waite's mk1? Surely this is a bit more 'PH'?

I'm pleased for you, and hope the car is going to someone who will give it as much care and respect as you have. There really is a case for the preservation of a few good base models of various things. As the article said, the proportions of the Mk1 are spot on. They look good from every angle. Despite having a Mk1 as a daily driver for 14 years (and 265,000 miles) I wouldn't want to go down that road again. After having luxuries such as brakes and just knowing there's a little more substance between you and the outside world in newer cars, I'd never feel completely relaxed pottering about in one of these.
That said, I do love them and I really hope the new owner keeps it as original as possible.

Saw this up for sale sans engine and transmission a while back. Boba's mk1 is the new beast to keep an eye onhttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howabou...
My first car!
Pea green 1.1 or 1.3L (cant remember which) W reg with brown interior. Carburettor was naffed (flakey bits blocking stuff) so had a webber one fitted which made it work properly. Also swapped the 155/13 tyres for some 185/14s off a friends "better" 1.6 GL model (still steel wheels) and it transformed the handling!

KR with Audi S2 spec pistons iirc. Is it an ABF? Or strokered KR?
Oh and for the person who said that they cannot understand why there is any interest in mk1 golfs that are non GTIs as the rest were normal cars. That maybe so but given the choice of the competition at the time and the availability of similar cars now it would suggest the mk1 was the better choice long term.
Seen many non RS mk3 Escorts. mk1 Astras (non GTE), Ranault 11s ....
It is kind of cool and Retro but to be honest, I suspect it would be a bit of a pain to drive, 50 bhp, even our C1 has another 18 bhp and that is pretty slow once it leaves a town centre.
Stick a decent engine in (Not a V6, too heavy, 150 bhp usually does the trick and dont go overboard with a 300 bhp turbo), decent brakes, suspension and lower it subtley on some wider steels, keep it looking original and enjoy.

I had a beautiful original Golf, not a Mk1, but a Mk2 1.6GL, rather unfashionable compared with a GTi, 1984 B-reg, purchased in August 1995, one owner and 31,000 miles in a time-warp and kept it absolutely as-factory for 10 years to 112,000. In a very attractive combination of Polar Silver (very pale gold) with a tan/brown/oatmeal interior, it was a motorway mile-muncher by virtue of the very tall gearing afforded by the 4+E gearbox which gave 27mph per 1000 revs. The GL had its own particularly nice set of steel wheels at this time - you would not improve the look by fitting alloys.
Overall one of the most satisfactory cars I have ever owned, for the colour and discreet looks, comfort, all-round ability, reliability and consistent 40+ mpg. Wish I had kept it but ran out of garage space....

My mother had a VW Golf in the early 1980s - it is the car I learned to drive in. It was a 1.3 litre CL inn blue with a bluish interior, registration ELV 234Y.
I really disliked the car; it was horrible to drive, uncomfortable and none too reliable. She replaced it with a Peugeot 309 SR which was a better car in every respect.
This particular one is in lovely, original condition though, which is refreshing to see.

I don't really understand the obsession with the mk1 Golf. Sure the GTi is, with hindsight, iconic but the "normal" car was just another boring hatchback with little to recommend it compared to its competition.
the Mk I Golf was THE first modern hatchback. the Mini laid the path for everyone (although it lacked a hatchback, everything else - fwd, transverse engine, small, etc - was there), but it wasn't until the Golf that the major manufacturers really went all in on compact, fwd hatchbacks.that's why it's important. plus, of course, the fact of the GTi, the first hot hatch, as you say.

I think we are forgetting the Alfasud Ti, which preceded the Golf, albeit initially without the hatchback, but all versions of the Alfasud had a sportier edge than the rest of the Golf family; such a tragic waste of could have been, had they not built them from high scrap-content Russian steel.....that's why it's important. plus, of course, the fact of the GTi, the first hot hatch, as you say.
