If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen !
Discussion
Thank goodness not everything in life is as bad as a VW if my parents experience is anything to go by.
08 Passat estate fom new - DMF and clutch grenaded itself with less than 2000 miles on the clock. All 4 injectors replaced under warrenty. Variable vane turbo goosed.
62 plate Passat split gearbox casing. Fixed under warrenty. Would have been £2.5k otherwise.

My 2 year old Golf TDi is going in for a new DMF, clutch and gearbox next week at 40k. Apparently DMF failures are common on the Passat but less so on the Golf. VW want the car for four days.
4 days? What are they doing? Making a custom DMF for it from locally mined metals? My local Indy did the DMF on the wife's Touran for £600 in an afternoon.
My Caddy TDi that I've owned from new 2004, gave it's engine up last month at 218,000, I've fitted another, a used one out of a 2005 Caddy and now it's ready to do another 200,000 miles, I have to keep reminding myself when I was cussing the van of how many trouble free miles I've done prior to the engine giving up.
I've a 2012 golf 1.6TDI.
Got it with 13k on it in Aug 13, now got 40,000 on it.
They put a water pump on it at 37K and a new timing belt as the pump was leaking. Also there was an intermittent fault with it cutting out and they put a new engine wiring loom in it.
All done under warranty, lent me a new golf each time it was in.
In fairness i didnt buy it because i perceived the brand to be "reliable", however it was no more expensive than a Ford Focus or Vauxhall and i dont think they're any better.
Getting great MPG and it seems well screwed together.
I have no faith in ANY modern diesel. Since they put DPFs, EGR valves and DPFs on them i think they're all time bombs come middle age+

It's not a brand thing. It's a modern car thing. My most reliable cars have been old cheap French stuff. Possibly in part because you don't mind minor issues on £10k cars. My least reliable have been expensive £40k+ German marques like BMW.
I've no idea which way to turn either .. Lexus/Japanese ?

There's a reason that of the top 10 best selling car's in the USA, not one of them is a VW.
Yes, the reason is because they're imports, they're expensive.http://www.businessinsider.com/why-americans-arent...
It seems Price, lack of a competitive crossover, questionable past reliability of their mainstream engines in the american market and crowded / competitive marketplace are the top reasons.
What I don't like about VAG main stream stuff is when a problem occurs the mechanic / internet / whoever reply with ' oh yeah they are known for that I had a 1994 xx and the water leaks in here and frys that', disappointing when you are talking about a 2012 version and yes the same crap design feature is still present and hasn't been addressed.

They won't touch them with a barge pole in Americaland, their reputation for reliability is horrible.
I was in San Francisco in June. Loads of Volkswagen Vento's and B4 Passat's on the roads of California. Virtually no modern day equivalents though! They have definitely lost their way. They won't touch them with a barge pole in Americaland, their reputation for reliability is horrible.

Whatever you do, don'y look in the engine bay of the brand new 2015 Subaru WRX STI.Most of it would bolt directly into my 2003 Impreza, or into a classic impreza from the early 90s.
Subaru, if it sort of works, then why fix it...
