UK turbos are the very very baseline turbo ImpreIza. If you wanted quick then you started at the bottom.

Stuff like the WRX STI from the late 90 (280bhp) still seems very quick even now - 60 in mid 4s

True, but at the time I needed something fully mapped for crap UK fuel. There was no 99 oct. available in my town back then, which I believe the wilder imports needed.

I've got a WRX bugeye, which is mapped for normal unleaded because I cant always get the higher octane stuff.
I wasn't chasing bhp, but want a usable car.
Its about 260 bhp but can be up to 280 bhp on super.
Its also had 3 cats removed and 1 sports cat fitted so it sounds pretty good too.
I should of just bought an STI, because I've spent almost 6 grand on it, and its worth around 2 eek

With just an exhaust and remap a UK turbo will make 260-270bhp which will be nearly as quick as the imports in a straight line whilst benefiting from more compliant suspension.

I'd say buy on history/condition and then either UK or Import cars can be a fantastic budget performance proposition.
