So you are going through and average speed camera zone......

But the speed limit is 50, not an indicated 50?
Admittedly at 57 I am flickering between 53/4 on GPS.
I didn't say it was a problem that people sat at that speed, its a limit not a target after all.
But don't look down on others in a belief that you are in the right because your speedo says 50.
I suppose the problem is that the idea is to all go at the same speed. You're at indicated 57 and you get people who think they need to drive a bit less than the limit so do indicated 47. Fine if it's not too busy, but you can end up with traffic concertinering.Admittedly at 57 I am flickering between 53/4 on GPS.

Indicated 50 on your car could be as little as 46mph.
The person going past you is using their sat nav to go through the average speed zone at an actual 55mph, keeping them inside the 10% + 1 (or whatever it is in your area)
So they've got 10mph on you straight away.
Someone who is more involved with the average speed camera side of things may be able to shed some light on this, but I believe the enforcement between pairs can only be done 'as the crow flies', to discount any possible argument about which lanes you were in shortening the distance travelled etc.
Even if that isn't the case, they'd presumably have to measure the distance as the shortest feasible distance you could travel between the two cameras and use that to calculate your speed. Assuming you're staying in one lane and the road bends etc. the actual distance you cover could be higher thus meaning you could eek out another mph here or there... You'd have to be pretty committed though

Most people aren't that precious about squeezing the last .1mph out of a limit which are often there for the safety of highway maintenance workers.
Maybe set off 10 minutes earlier?
Who are they? Can't say I've seen those before.Maybe set off 10 minutes earlier?
The cameras on the M1 in the 50mph stretch just south of Rugby certainly work
Despite having to be in London to work a train north at a specific time, when I'm in the staff van heading south I just take it easy now, I really don't need anymore points. Lesson duly learnt and if my train departs a little late then so be it. Looking back, most of times that I've put my foot down to get there in good time I've ended up stationary on the North Circular anyway!

If you're doing 50mph by your speedo, and your tyres are getting a bit close to replacement, and your pressures aren't as well maintained as they should be, it's quite likely that you could be doing only 46mph maybe.
If you use your satnav or phone to measure your GPS speed, this could be a more accurate way of gauging that you are travelling at a true 50mph ..... Depending on conditions, surroundings, equipment etc, the GPS might not be as accurate as at other times, and should not be considered as some kind of precise atomic Greenwich reference.
Never the less .....
If you were to consider GPS as 100% accurate, then "theoretically" the Police should give you some leeway to account for the inaccuracy of your speedo ..... 10% is typically suggested for this. If one were so inclined, you could creep your speed up to 54.99999mph without risking a ticket. Theoretically! With your less than new tyres, maybe your speedo could be reading 59mph by then.

I'm sure you're right. I can't be arsed with the maths but an extra 5-10mph for 5 miles won't make enough difference to my journey time to justify the stress, worry and risk about getting caught, fined and points. 5-10mph indeed, but I've had people go creaming past me at what must have been 70-80 in a 50 Zone.J4CKO said:
Doggedly stuck at 50 mph (or whatever limit) with everybody else crawling along, wondering what you can get away with and whether switching lanes and lurking behind lorries will work, and then, there is always that one car that goes steaming through 20 or 30 mph faster !
Who are these people ? do they wonder why everybody is going so slow, do they know something we dont ? do they get lots of post from the Central Ticketing Office ?
M60 a few days ago, in the long and tedious 50 mph section and a girl in a new looking Audi A1 goes through a good deal faster than anyone else, then a scratty old Zafira.
What is going on ?
At night if the entry point and exit point are not highly lit I'm told it means they aren't active, not sure if that means only active daytime or not active at allWho are these people ? do they wonder why everybody is going so slow, do they know something we dont ? do they get lots of post from the Central Ticketing Office ?

One thing I've always struggled with is where the average cameras take their readings from, without a marked line on the ground. Any ideas?

I occasionally tweek my progress a little for the comfort of moving at a different speed to vehicles in the neighbouring lanes. I think it is dangerous to risk creeping along and spending extended periods in other vehicles blind spots, or worse still the spray of a commercial vehicle.
Stats may suggest that row upon row of traffic travelling at a uniform speed is safe, however for me I never feel safe in that situation.
I find an indicated ~62mph is fine through an average 50mph zone. Never had a ticket from them. I don't have many people, if any, passing me either so I do wonder if other people think I'm doing 70-80mph and just aren't great at judging speed differentials.
Blipping between managed motorway gantries is another good game.

I agree, although I don't think I would push my indicated to over 60mph, I think you really have to have confidence in your actual speed and the enforcement thresholds.Blipping between managed motorway gantries is another good game.
Funnily enough someone called our work 2 weeks to complain about a driver, the first thing she mentioned was that he was doing over 90mph.
All the vans are tracked and logged, he never went over 76mph the whole journey. So yes people aren't great or they exaggerate to make a point.
