I have to take exception to any GTV6 being described as "good condition" - brand new ones weren't, restored ones aren't - they WILL break down and misbehave, it's engineered into them ;0

I looked at a few in the early 90s and they were already rough then - a few were in need of deep restoration so I'd imagine a tidy car has either been stored or is on it's 2nd or 3rd restoration by now?

Lovely looking cars, sound fantastic - never been a sensible daily driver option tho - essentially they're soluble ;0

I don't know about that - you can get a specialist to do a better job than the factory ever could.

The Maratona edition was referred to as the "Marijuana" edition, in reference to what Alfa must have been smoking at the time. hehe

No 3.0 here but some markets did get the GTV6 long after we stopped. There was also the wonderful oddity of the Callaway Twin Turbo GTV6 (don't get too excited, it wasn't much faster than a modern hot hatch, but very quick in its day).

The South African 3.0 was a factory homologation special designed and built on the production line alongside the regular 2.5 by Alfa Romeo South Africa. I know of 2 of those in the UK, one currently in bits. It wasn't the 75 engine, which we never got there because Alfa pulled out of SA before the 75 was introduced.

In the UK I see quite a few GTV6s have been retrofitted with a 75 3.0 V6. Perhaps the article is referring to those.

EDIT: Oh, and that is pricey, but every Alfa I've seen on that Hollybrooks site has had a mental pricetag. Alex Jupes are expensive too but I've always put that down to him charging for the work he's done on the car. Most seem to be 15 to 18k at the moment, which is still at least 10k too much. They have climbed hugely with the current bubble, particularly in the last year. They used to be cheaper than S2 Spiders.

my father didn't have a 6; he had the 2000 4-cyl (a '77 car i think) - i remember as a 14-yr old being impressed for the first time by a car my dad owned. it was italian, looked awesome for 1978, had that weird alfa thing of only having the tach in front of the driver, which supposedly made it more racy, but wasn't in fact very practical. it also had a Blaupunkt radio - the first i'd ever seen - more euro exoticness creeping into our remote corner of the Great White North (or the 51st state, call us what you will).

unfortunately, it was still an alfa, wiht all the usual 70s alfa foibles - steel of the same gauge as tinfoil, wiht the anti-water properties of a paper bag, and a predilection for tires and clutches. although that last might have had something to do with my father's habit of making hill starts in 3rd gear......................

after 3 years he swapped it for a 5.0L Mustang 3-door. awful 4-spd manual box, weird bespoke metric michelins and a live axle, but the servicing costs were significantly cheaper!

South Africa had 3 litre GTVs.

When this came out I was 15 and it sat in my dream garage next to the LP5000S and the TR6.

Not the quickest of cars but the 6 noise is amongst the best you can get out of a street legal standard car.

V6 will rev to 7K I believe. Search for the German 2.8 gems and then pay 20K.

No one would have a problem with the price if it was a Ford of similar vintage and condition.

On the subject of not being a 3.0, South African import aside they didn't make a 3.0.

Well worth it for an original non-restored car in my opinion. (for rarity value alone)

Lovely crackling on the overrun in that video. This GTV6 is a contemporary classic. Yikes! The price is certainly eye-opening.

Lovely. Remember when they were new and did hanker after one. Seem to remember seeing one at auction going for buttons. Think I'd rather have an Integrale though
