Bit of a leftfield choice but a work colleague swears by his 2.0 TDI Seat Altea XL Freetrack.

His is the only I've ever seen so choice would probably be limited.

I had a standard Altea prior to my Passat and it never missed a beat in the 3 years I owned it.

Honda CRV?

Judging by the pics on Autotrader the boot can be fitted with a horizontal shelf. So you could put the dog on top and everything else underneath.

Honda CRV looks good and with budget, not sure about putting the dog up top in teh boot tho, hes a 30kg lab, and isnt a huge fan of getting in the boot.

Would need a vertical split in the middle

Which has the bigger boot between CRV and tiguan?

The shelf was standard in the previous gen CRV and had a 10Kg load limit. Not much use for your dog!

Having a look on google and the Honda CRV does appear to have the bigger boot from its rivals the sportage, kuga etc, its within price range and I have had honda before so this could be a good option.

How does the CRV boot compare aganist a vw passat estate , ford mondeo estate and toyota avenis estate

Just from a quick google, the CRV is 589 litres against the Passats 650. Not sure which models they are referring to though.

Mondeo and Avensis are smaller than the CRV.

What about a skoda yeti ? I've never driven one and don't particularly like the looks myself but a lot of Phers speak very highly of them and seem to tick a lot of boxes.

We got a Mazda CX-5 for a similar reason. I'd recommend adding them to your list.
CX7 is even better. My other half has one and refuses to trade it in for the CX5 because it's too small. The other car we loved was the Legacy Tourer.

avensis 543 l so passat is bigger at the 650l as you said

I dont think for my budget I'll get a bigger boot than the VW passat in the estate catogory, or Honda CRV in the 4x4 catogory

The MPV cmax grand and verso are coming in at 450l approx

The c max standard is about same size as the grand boot over 20-30 L in it

Citroen C5 Tourer slightly used with a 3,0 HDI and the exclusive package (massage seats, double glased windows etc). Get one while you can, the hydropneumatic suspension is a dream, the car is supremly comfortable, quiet, refined and according to the german ADAC also very reliable. In my opinion it is one of the best kept secrets in the slightly used car market. I for one also like the way it looks.

Which would people recommend out of the below for my set up?

I dont think for my budget I'll get a bigger boot than the VW passat in the estate catogory, or Honda CRV in the 4x4 catogory and the C-max or S-max boots appear smaller than the above.

I am siding with the estate?

You said no to the XC90, but did you consider V70 or Saab 95?

IME, it's far easier to load child seats into a 4x4 than a normal car, plus the CRV appears to be around 200mm wider than the Passat, so this should equate to more seating space in the back.

One thing to bear in mind is that older larger dogs and SUVs might not combine well. The opposite of the extra height helping to lift kids into car seats.

The kids will quickly get to the size where they will climb into a seat themselves, our dog now gets in our V70 through the rear passenger door with the seat squab lifted to make the entry point a bit lower. Anything higher and we'd be into dog ramp or lifting him in territory.

If you're thinking Passat estate, see if the Skoda/SEAT version is cheaper (Superb estate?).

From experience, your real issue wont be boot space, it will be width across the back to fit 2 seats and an adult. Just my 2c.

Thanks for the replies

I know I will need to compramise somewhere so for me the bigger boot space is going to win it for me, I understand its going to be hard to get 2 car seats and an adult in the back.

I would say my best hope for this is a CRV or S MAX, but for the bigger boot an estate, as long as the CRV can take 2 car seats and an adult and the boot meets my requirments then I may side with thr CVR, however if the boot doesnt work for us then I'll need to go with the bigger boot
