According to the local news this morning, there are a surplus of these in shelters around Buckinghamshire. Mmmm, now about that upcoming stag party....On another note, I remember reading an article years ago about somebody slotting a V8 (most likely Rover) into one of these!!

No, no and a thousand times no. When I was a student I was paid to drive one of these things. Luton body with a lift on the back. 3 years old and on its second engine, corrosion on the cab/bonnet structure already. 70mph = 4000rpm+ in 5th, so spinning its nuts off on the motorway. Basically driven foot to the floor almost all the time. Had to cover up to 350 miles a day in the thing and it was awful. For urban stuff, sub 55mph, it would probably be OK. It was just utterly useless on the motorway & I imagine this heap would be hell on earth if it was a camper van and being driven long distances at speed.
Shed - could you not have found either a Transit or a Renault Master of a similar age? The 2.8 Masters of that era were absolute flying machines & a joy to drive. This, on the other hand, was awful.

the old Police riot vans were Rover V8 powered, when they were Freight Rover 200s, and I believe they could be ordered by the public with that motor tooOn another note, I remember reading an article years ago about somebody slotting a V8 (most likely Rover) into one of these!!

Where does one start...
I managed to strand myself on someone's driveway while out delivering mail one day. Purely because it was on some strange angle where the rear wheels did'nt have enough weight over them to get any purchase, I had managed to beach an LDV. Lot's of swearing and making me late for the rest of my walk, somewhat ruined the day. Probably made me late for my daily nap.
I can also confirm that 100% of all post vehicles will have been thrashed to within an inch of their lives. I was a reserve postie so found myself working all manner of jobs, that included the late post collection. At this time of day in area's like Great Gransden, van and driver would majestically transform into an impreza being driven by none other than Mr Mcrae. I would dart between post boxes with the grace and finesse of a rally driver, it must have been quite a sight to behold (in my mind at least) or one of utter disgust depending on your point of view.
Would I buy an ex postal van for a bag of sand? not a chance, and I really do have a use for a van in my life.

The radio probably did work, its just the aerials were crap and they, for some reason, were provided with non-RDS radios into the 2000s. Constantly had to retune the sodding thing hoping to pick up a signal. Everyone else had gone to RDS radios by the mid-late 1990s, for some reason LDV didn't. Though it was in low compression carburettor tune with about 115bhp (I think), so they were still slow and incredibly thirsty.not sure if the bigger 400s (which became this thing) were ever offered with it
I found it interesting when they brought out the LDV Maxus. Obviously there's no point making a st van if you're going to put a half good engine in it, so they sourced one from VM.

Absolutely +1 on this - drove them a lot when I worked as a courier on uni holidays. They were utterly wk even when a year or so old. The gear change was dreadful even on a new one, the parts bin leftovers from the creation of Rover out of the remains of BL meant many parts could be traced back to the 70s. I did once go to the LDV factory in the Midlands with a view to applying for a job, but was utterly put off after a tour of the place.
The Transit has its faults from this era (notably fuel pumps and rust) but everything about the LDV was a million times worse.
