'Ember' special edition for £47,200, not even a mention of what engine is fitted? I suppose it doesn't really matter for a car like this, not for most of its target market anyway, but this is PH?
Exactly. It's the same as the survey that found the majority of BMW drivers think their cars are front wheel drive. Most people couldn't give a toss about such matters.

the Evoque has probably lost a few sales to the Discovery Sport.. I went looking for an Evoque, didn't know the Discovery Sport existed until I went in the showroom last year.

Much roomier, and a couple of extra fold down seat, and just as pretty. Mine has the new engine, and feels very lively.

Really, any information about that survey? It would be interesting to see the results, or should I say worrying.

At least this article contains all the important information:

Colour - tick
Wheel size - tick
infotainment screen size - tick

What more could you wish for.....

Girlfriend has a 190bhp diesel one, it's not quick enough for me personally but it's more than adequate for knocking around in and isn't slow by any means. It's a likeable car, if I had one then I'd want 300bhp at least which would make it a cracking car, but it's pointless for most people.

It's certainly a massive improvement over the 1.6 petrol 308CC she had before, fking awful thing and despite being geared like a single seater race car it was slower than a stoned inbred dunked in treacle and told to do his best sloth impression

Spotted that-the reason is simple. A lot of people don't ask (can i have a black one) coupled with the fact it's a bit of a joke. Over 9 secs to 62 is slow. The car needs 240 to justify these prices.

This isn't the only one I've seen as it's specific to 1 Series, but note it's BMW's own survey: http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1043671_80-perc...

my dislike of them is merely down to the pathetic engines. I love SUVs of all kinds. If the Evoque was 10k less i still wouldn't buy one but id understand. You can say it's clever of JLR but it's just taking the pi55.

I'm an Evoque owner and was considering replacing it with a Discovery Sport for all the reasons above. However, the interior of the DS is not quite as 'nice'. It feels like the engineers were given a very specific brief to make sure it felt like a bit of a step down to ensure people trading in Evoques for something bigger bought the RRS.

Interior is way better than want went before.. Have quite a high spec one though!
It's a bit of a scramble, but I was surprised that adults do fit in the fold up seats.

I think my 'problem' is I have a top spec Evoque (Prestige) with leather trimmed dash, higher quality leather seats etc and those aren't available on the DS. To be honest I'll probably still buy one as there's nothing else out there which does the job quite as well, I just need to decide if I wait for the Ingenium petrol engines or go for the sale Ford sourced lump I have now.

My mother in law just bought an X1 with a 2 litre diesel engine, she is perfectly happy with 180 ish bhp, "plenty of oompf" as she puts it, i.e. enough performance to fulfil its role as transport for her and her dog, some shopping etc, buyers of these kinds of car dont want huge performance, even I have got to thinking my current car is probably faster than what I need, my mother in law would st herself if she put her foot down in it and never bother again.

At the end of the day its a torquey engine with 180 bhp in a car that isnt that big or heavy, they are between 1600 to 1700 kilos, I think most buyers are like airlines are with planes, enough to do the job, efficiently and reliably with a smidge in reserve for when you need it, not 300 percent more power than it needs so the pilot can show off and scare himself.

Point of the car: make money for JLR and their shareholders.

Over 500k sold.

Objective achieved.

Some of the armchair critics are amusing.

To be honest, if I were in the market for an SUV it would be my first port of call. Great looking car, and not half bad to drive either. If you get into something like this expecting hot hatch performance and handling, I would suggest it's not the car that's at fault.....

The wife's is the prestige one too and it is pretty nice. The DS top level doesn't come up to the same level as they no doubt want to keep some separation between Range Rover and Land Rover. I'm trying to steer the Mrs into an F-Pace to replace this but I'd want the 240hp Ingenium petrol in it that they don't currently offer.

Don't put yourself down like that. You'll grow into your looks...hopefully, and start doing more activities so you don't feel so pointless.

So, how do you feel about the car?

I had a good look at the F Pace in Geneva and for some reason it didn't quite do it for me, but the extra seats in the DS are a big bonus as we often have people visiting and need more space - the Evoque is our only car. The only petrol F Pace is the s/c V6 at the moment so I think it'd have to be a diesel too as I'm not up for dropping the wrong side of 80k CHFs on a family car!

As said before great car let down by under powered engine
Indeed. I reckon a specced-up Convertible would be getting on for £65k, yet can be powered with the 180PS Ingenium diesel. Can anyone think of a slower car for more money? biggrin
I am surprised it can even move with only 180 bhp and 318 lb/ft of torque....

Er, it goes to sixty in 9.3 seconds. I remember when that was a passable fast hatch kind of time, sure its expensive and not ballistically fast but for the target market it is perfectly adequate and can be had with more powerful engines.

Not sure a lot pf PH actually has experienced "underpowered" and it seems to mean "doesnt crush your intrnal organs as much as I would like"
Agreed - I think it's some sort of petrolhead machismo: "I can prove I'm tougher than other people on the internet because I need 500bhp before I can feel acceleration."

It just makes me think they don't know how to get the best of a car. Truly talented artists and craftsmen who can create masterpieces with the most basic of tools.
