I'm 24 and it makes me cringe. I've had a cat back for a while and I just felt like a tt. It's great at times but pulling away, cold start in the morning, knowing everyone's in bed thinking "Not that nob again" isn't great.

I'm all for solenoid valved exhausts. If i get something in the future with 6+ cylinders I'll definitely look at bypassing the muffler with one for a bit of extra sound but at appropriate times.

Thanks to work, I have had the misfortune to stay in a hotel next to a roundabout in Crawley for the last few nights. I was surprised by how regularly the air was split by people razzing their vehicles around. Mostly bikes with aftermarket exhausts (the ones I saw while out and about nearby), but also chavved up hatches, nice stuff like M4s, and some stuff that sounded quite exotic.

I'm all for finding ways to enjoy yourself on the road, but was pretty depressed by how many people thought a busy, built up area was an appropriate place to wring out every last drop from your engine, not to mention how antisocial the timing was. Anything from early in the morning to midnight seemed fair game. Some people are just tiresome bell ends.

I'm not sure this is really on topic now I've typed it, but maybe noticing things like this is an age thing too.
What you describe is deep-rooted into Uk culture and has become contagious in recent years, Playstation generation?
the Police and authorities have given up and even go as far as protecting the fashion industry of loud pipes, keeping the MOT soft and vetoing Eu laws designed to help quality of life.

It's a growth market targeting people with low-self-esteem (check-out Miltek's POP n BANG black box) which the UK, with ever decreasing quality of life and poor quality housing is not short of... Yes, ouch!

There was a guy on a Harley that trundled to the motorbike/bike park at our local Sainsburys, now apart from a few cases like actual proper, hairy arsed, evil looking, bearded, leathers with back patch type riders most people look a bit of a willy, he was no exception apart from he rolled in, burbling in that awful Harley way with "The boys of summer" blasting out of a stereo somewhere on his steed, at least he seemed to think he looked the dogs bks and I guess that is all that matters.

I'm with you on not (now) liking or seeing the need for loud exhausts and showing them off, not sure that I'm seeing a clear link to people having low self-esteem and poor quality housing though.

I've got friends with loud pipes on their bikes, they live in nice places, have good jobs, stable relationships and are self-assured. They tend to be aware of their environment and other people when using them though.

YMMV of course.

sorry I hurt your feelings, I am considerate when it comes to peoples feelings. I note there are bigger train wreck threads on PH than noise related issues though if you want to have a go at postings styles.

by the way, if you've got low self esteem and need to prove something, leave the pipe on your car alone and try a Formula 100C Kart and invite a few friends to witness it. cheap as chips and the quickest thing you'll drive. will put a lot into perspective.

I have family abroad and in the UK to make direct comparisons with the youth culture. Im convinced the UKs vile and unique housing estate culture is responsible for a lot of quality of life and behaviour issues. Build them cheap and cram them in. Britain is becoming one big ghetto. No style, or taste except the odd new building or project copied directly from contemporary styles that have been in mainland for decades. Most housing in the Uk is smeared half to death with white UPVC panels wherever they can fit them in by unqualified tasteless window companies.
no pride in neighbourhoods and lack of aspirations is what comes out of UKs housing policy.

Most people I know on mainland have aspirations to build their own houses, to a high standard, quality, which is strangely affordable, by highly qualified builders. Building the communities people have pride in. they don't give 2 sts what image the car portrays. When people live in st housing the car tends to become an important statement. Britain is the most car and motorcycle snobby country Ive been in at the same time becoming one of the most unfriendly towards cars, st roads, lack of parking spaces let alone decent size garages. My Swiss friends in cheaper housing keep their cars in heated basements by default. Wtf arnt UK housing projects built with underground parking like on the mainland?

I was in Malaysia last year and hung round with some bikers, most of which ride smaller cc bikes, nippy little 150cc being very popular and the lads on bigger bikes treated them as equals. Malaysia is the most fun Ive had on bikes, yet In the UK bikers on smaller ccs are looked down on or not worthy (unless its a mini moto which strangely are allowed to be fun) . Everyone needs to get on a bigger bike asap to prove something, wear and fit the aggressive accessories to go with it, then of course the riding style and selfish attitude to finish off...

Actually I agree with a fair bit of what Oilspill says. For me a nicely running car is whisper quiet. Smooth and sophisticated. It's easy to make an engine noisy, and much more difficult to make it run smooth and quiet - so why do we think noisy is good - beyond me.
But then I dislike antisocial stuff like tts on motorbikes.

So apropos of nothing, but I was driving back home through London yesterday afternoon, when a gaggle of motorbikes tore past enthusiastically.
A few of which had 'motorsport' pipes on the back.

Being the owner of noisy cars myself, I thought nothing of it, right up to the point it scared the life out of my 2 kids in the back (2 and 3yo). Sufficiently for the youngest to cry quite a lot.

Which made me think that I should be more observant / considerate before opening the taps in future.

Just wondering if others have had similar thoughts before?

Maybe I'm just getting old.
I feel the same, but I was probably much more inconsiderate. It's a paradox.

A guy down the road from me has 2 harleys.
Don't get me wrong, I have a loudish car and don't mind noisy exhausts but these bikes are ridiculous.

He'll turn up on one at midnight and early morning and they are so loud.

My biggest issue with it all is that if it was a car, everyone would get the hump and you'd be public enemy number 1 but a Harley...oh that's fine.
