If the V5C doesn't prove ownership, then knowing the ID of the seller makes no difference.
So what safeguards you in these situations?
Why are you so keen?

Plenty of BMW 4 series convertibles around.

They're being upfront.

I would do the deal at the registered owners address.

Last year I sold my Mum's car. A dealer bought it and I did explain who I was and all he asked for was a letter from the owner that gave me permission to sell it. I typed that letter myself and got one of my kids to sign it.
Whilst I imagine that was a sensible way of resolving a problem, it might have also been fraud. Technically.

Which is why obtaining power of Attorney is a discussion that needs to be had at the RIGHT time.

When I bought a classic car, the seller properly checked out I was legit, looking at Facebook/linkedin, even rang corporate switchboard to check I existed before I went to view it. Obviously I was unaware of this untill he mentioned it after I had bought the car.

You could be doing the same to the seller.

Having said that, given the whiff of scam, I would pass

The very fact you have got over £2k knocked off before you have even seen the car is deeply suspicious and doesnt help dispel with the scam theory

My brother met someone to buy a Porsche as the owner was 'away'

Car was legit, sort of... but it was issued a fake MOT which was covering up quite a few issues. He got the car at a decent price so wasn't too out of pocket sorting the additional issues, but definitely something to be weary of.

Responses here is why I can't sell my car at the moment; I'm currently living/working in Netherlands and my car is stored at my dad's where it is registered and insured. Looking at selling it on as it looks likely I'll be remaining here permanently and importing it isn't worth the hassle, so my dad would have to be my proxy with the seller.

But everyone thinks it is a scam.

Because most of the time it is.

You could change owners to your father so that he can sell it, and you'd no longer have the 'suspicious' out-of-the-country tale to explain.

" I recently got it serviced by BMW " could the OP call BMW to confirm they know the car. But even the photos look overly staged for a private seller.

£30k seems like a large chunk of change to lose when whilst the car is nice - it's certainly not unique.

I'm obviously expecting everything to be dodgy now, but does the steering wheel and arm rest look a bit shiny for the mileage? Selling a few months before the 1st MOT...

Regardless, it's not a rare car and there are similarly priced examples available from dealers with all the protection that comes with. I wouldn't touch it.

I agree, they look pretty good pictures and it looks well cared for.

So why drop £2k straight off before the guy has viewed it.

I don't even think the car is in the UK -

The construction of the car park and buildings behind reminds me of certain parts of Italy - nothing in the UK. Happy to be told otherwise.

I'd say that's the car park its photographed at and based on google maps it must be a regular spot to do it, you can see the edge of the red building to the west and city tower in the distance in the interior dash photos.

0161 5373709 / 0161 3373709 both come up as scam numbers (HMRC / Accident Claim)

BMW selling number on advert 0161 9373709 would point to a scam as others have stated.
