How long until new car hype dies for you?

The closest thing we've had to a new car was a J-plated Ford Fiesta 'Fanfare' special edition. It took a good day or two to get over the excitement of being able to show off the special stickers and rubber spoiler, but things went downhill rapidly thereafter. What sort of engine did it have? Who knows? Who cares?
I too had a Fanfare - J324PTF to be precise. The metallic blue was a brilliant colour. The 1.1 8v with 4 speed box, not so brilliant. tim0e said:

Just got a new car 4 days ago since done nearly 500miles and spent £110 on fuel “spirited driving” or whatever u call it, This needs to stop soon because it’s uneconomical but
It’s so addicting
OKIt’s so addicting
Only ever had 1 new car & im 62 , don’t think I’ll ever have another as ( I think it’s a old age thing ) but £30/ £40,000 for a car , just seems absolutely crazy to me .
Though reading on here I do understand the vast majority buy by pcp , lease etc .
Good luck though to the ones who get new cars , hope they enjoy

I bought a newish Merc 250d fake amg estate with some money I got from shares, as the company I worked for got sold and we all got a payout.
Turns out:
1) I’m not a Merc person
2) it is perfectly average in every way and has zero character
3) not even that economical
4) doesn’t handle that well considering how bad the ride is
I swapped with my wife for her L200.
We could have paid off the loan on the L200, done the shower room, bought a new bike etc., but instead I spent it all on a car I don’t like.
I’d go back to my SAAB 9-3 any day

My neighbour says something similar he can’t understand paying more than £3000 for a car when his house cost less than that when he bought it Though reading on here I do understand the vast majority buy by pcp , lease etc .

He only replied once someone had bravely picked up on how his post was written.
Everyone can work out what he meant.
The chap started a light hearted thread about his new car and gets a pile on.
It's not much of a welcome.

In the nicest way possible, it’s a decent taxi spec family load lugger, what were you expecting?!Turns out:

Bit of an odd way of looking at it - does he not understand paying more than 1s 2d for a loaf of bread either since that's what bread cost in 1965? Plus I bet he'd be more than happy to sell his house for a fkton more than 3 grand. Anyway it's a good topic and I apologise for the grumpies that have found it. I've never much liked the idea of buying new for the reason that you're paying a premium for that 'new car feeling' and the cachet that goes with a brand new car, but really quite quickly it's not new any more. Certainly after 6 months it's not, but you've still got the new car payments for another few years. Obviously you can say that much the same thing happens no matter what age car you buy, but the amounts involved are bigger with a brand new car. Still, as always, very happy for those that do and provide tightwads like me with a ready supply of used ones!

It’s a totally fair comment though, I think it’s just that I dislike it so much more than I thought I would. The fancy stereo is not even as good as the basic one in the L200.
This wasn’t wholly a decision by me btw, I was much happier with my V6 turbo Saab wagon

I managed to last nearly a month with my new 340i Touring, before I took it to an automatic car wash, but it was winter and it was absolutely plastered in road grime and salt. After that, it was just a car!
Why automatic car wash whyyyyy! Even my old car wasn’t even special but I had paint correct and bathed it religiously myself every time It's been nearly ten years since I actually bought a car I wanted as the last few have sort of fallen in my lap due to a death (so not a celebration at all, but I do love the car), or a local place wanted rid of an end of life vehicle I put a V6 engine into because I knew it'd fit easily, or one that I got cheap because of faults which turned into a nightmare.
I think as above, once I notice damage that's new or I hadn't seen when buying or something needs fixing, the magic is lost a bit.
Not sure I'll ever own new. Maybe as a retirement present but who knows the state of cars in 15 years time!
