many of you seem to have missed the "something that isn't also available as a mainstream model" bit of his requirements. Ie no souped up luxo-barges.

some good suggestions so far.

Sorry I should have pointed something else out - it must have 4 seats (2+2 is okay, it is only for a baby). Just started surfing the web for tidy Griffiths and Elises when I remembered the other half is pregnant!

Also no left hookers.

Also thinking late 80s minimum, so that discounts early 911s, old Mercs and BMW's

Suprised the Yank mob haven't been on here yet?

Porsche 944/968 are surprisingly practical, I imagine the 928 to be largely the same?

I looked at a few ropey old 944's, unfortuantely budget didnt quite cover either

A - decent car to begin with

B - ropey one plus work.

My daughter fitted fine in my 944t until she was 3....and then the problem was car seats, not legroom.
I got my wife, daughter and mum-in-law from Bournemouth to Manchester for the weekend once... for a wedding! (loads of luggage!!)....no complaints though...

With the new laws for car seats it makes almost all 2+2 useless

I thought about getting a two seater as it is only a 2nd car, but would prefer room for the other two.

944/968 or 928 surfacing as the favourites at the moment, closely followed by 190 cosworth.

Always liked the look of those Renault Alpine A610s as well. Anyone know if they are 4 seaters?

I'm sure I'll be corrected, but I am struggling to think of a car that isn't a hot version of a mainstream model that also isn't a convertable or has four seats. When you say 'mainstream', what do you mean?

For instance, your 'Grales were technically hot versions of cooking hatchbacks...

If it were my money, I'd possibly take a look at a minty mcmint E34 M5 3.8. Remember they were hand built and so aren't really 'hot' versions of a cooking model at all.

The 968 is a good choice but surprisingly, I found it rather dull and boring to drive paperbag

the laws are rubbish, as long as you say "This journey was unplanned" you can get away with anything.....

A610 VERY similar to 944 in the back..perhaps a smidge bigger if anything...

Can't believe no-one's suggested it already as it's now the new 'MX-5' on the forum (wink):-

Integra Type R. The mundane model was never sold in the UK, so the only ones you see ARE the hardcore ones. 176bhp/tonne and short gearing means it's quick enough, but you do need to use the 'box.

4 seats (rears are semi-adult...5'6" is about the comfortable limit), and a large boot. Oh, and 30+mpg on a long-run!

968CS (or just a Sport - rhd, no weight saving, more kit, same suspension) not a bad suggestion either.

RS2 or mint S2

OK, it may have been available as a mainstream model but how often do you see an Audi 80 on the road?

Much the same position as Im in.

Budget of around 10k for something thats a good, fun second car. The equally important criteria is that I dont want to lose a fortune on it as Im dipping into my house deposit for it!

Current short list for me is
968 CS
E30 M3
E34 M5
Clio Trophy (but not too sure on the future values of these)

Ill keep a keen eye on this thread! smile
Hmmm, that's a bit of a spread isn't it? 1800kg supersaloon to hot hatch?

I'd strongly suggest the E30 M3. I've owned one as well as a 968CS. The M3 is a better drive, although not as fast as the Porsche.

But the OP had better hurry, the 2.5l E30 M3 Sport Evo's are already out of your price range (£20k plus for a good example), and the best Evo ! & 2's are following them up. Find an exellent example, keep it well and it'll be better than money in the bank. And a lot more fun!

How about a Renult Alpine - you can pick up a mint one for that money! Fits all the criteria, rare, 4 seats fast etc.

Good Luck

Taz.
