Good call on the Citroen C6.
My old boss yrs ago had a 1985 Daimler and I went with him to a couple of sites and that car was beautifully refined - like a magic carpet!
Not sure of the model now as I saw it as an old chaps car in those days
That's the one above, was the same as the XJ12 series 3 Jag - had the pepper pot alloys. My old boss yrs ago had a 1985 Daimler and I went with him to a couple of sites and that car was beautifully refined - like a magic carpet!

Driven them all. Merc S320/500/600/55/63, Merc CLS 320/55/63, BMW 730D/730LD/745Li, Lexus LS600, Maybach 57, Range Rover Vogue TD6/TDV8/4.4/4.2 SC, Bentley Continental GT/Flying Spur, Arnage 4.4/6.75/Turbo Mulliner etc etc and the best without a shadow of a doubt for effortless wafting is definitely the Rolls Royce Phantom saloon. (Not the Drophead coupe though - thats more focused and stiffer)You cant hear the engine, the steering is light but not too light, the seats are extremely comfotable and build quality is bullet proof, everything is hidden away out of sight and they are amusingly rapid in a straight line....
Pleanty of other cars have more toys etc (S Class and Maybach in particular) but they are nowhere near as special a place to be. All in my opinion of course!!
In the real world? (Recent cars you can buy for <£20k) I reckon, just on what I've read on here of course, Lexus LS430? Or is it the Bangle 7?Pleanty of other cars have more toys etc (S Class and Maybach in particular) but they are nowhere near as special a place to be. All in my opinion of course!!

Citroen C6 can hold it's head up there too
I'm convinced one of these could be the ultimate stress buster for the daily commute. They look really good too.
However I have been taking a lot of Lemsip Max recently...

The Bangle 7 doesn't ride as well as the S-class of the same era IMHO. It seems to have more "sporty" pretensions and has a harder, less wafty ride.
Shame. Is it harder than the E38? The E38 740 I had was very refined... much more so than the X300 Jag.richardxjr said:

+1Only problem with the XJ12 was it was so quiet, if you farted the leather would ripple and everyone would know you did it, but good god its quick. I can only wonder what it would be like if it wasn't saddled with a 3sp gearbox.
Bentley Brooklands (Old one) - I WILL own a mulsanne bodied Bentley, just a fantastic car. You never want to go back to a pleb wagon ever again.
Bristol Blenheim - So deliciously oddball, built like no other car, never driven one but been a passenger. Just magical. But a bit severe near £200k price tag, but worth every penny IMO.

What floats along and is virtually silent inside - possibly a Lexus, Maybach, Merc S class?
I had a run of mill 406 saloon once and that had a great ride and was really quite inside - when making phone calls people at the other end often thought I was at home or work
I've been in some of the current E class Mercs and I was surprised at how much road noise was evident inside.
What have you driven that sent your passengers to sleep?
A Jaguar Sovereign HE - 5.3 litre V12. 'Tis some years ago now, but one of my passengers nodded off as we wafted along the A64 Malton by-pass at 120 mph in that car. I don't do that sort of thing now though; lack of suitable car, y'see, otherwise I had a run of mill 406 saloon once and that had a great ride and was really quite inside - when making phone calls people at the other end often thought I was at home or work

We now have a Peugeot 406 HDi - which to my mind is nothing special in refinement terms - but it's adequately pleasant for long journeys at fairly brisk speeds, and some of my recent passengers have remarked that the car is very smooth and comfortable to travel in, which is nice. It's just a shame that so little of the credit accrues to the exquisite skill and finesse of Le Conducteur though.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

Try a Volkswagon Phaeton.
A Bentley in the wrong clothes....and one hell of a bargain at the moment.
Not a Phaeton I know (which I have a lot of respect for) but I have the use of a Flying Spur this coming weekend. It's been a while since I have steered a luxury car so I am really looking forward to seeing if it lives up to my high expectations.A Bentley in the wrong clothes....and one hell of a bargain at the moment.
No doubt someone will come along soon and tell me it's not a real Bentley
