No way they can take 200kg from the car.........
sure you can, they are some 1,600+Kg's to start with.

getting shot of the 4wd is a massive start....
Isn't it amazing how much weight cars have to carry around these days.

I have an old 911 Turbo that weighs around 1300 kilos if I remember right. Ok, the new ones are 4x4 on one hand,
but have acres and acres of plastic on the other. So exactly how much weight is all this nanny-legislation actually contributing to the total weight of a car? And how is dragging all this gubbins around helping
to reduce pollution, when ditching it would use less fuel?

You may think I'm moaning about nothing, but 2-300kg is the equivalent of about 4-6 rugby-players.

[/rant]
Most rugby players I know weigh around 80-110kg hehe

Anyway, half the problem today seems to be the efficiency/mpg rating system. Weight is almost irrelevant if you don't accelerate much, and from the mpg/co2 figures we see around for most new cars, the test seems to only cover them going mostly at constant speeds.

If we actually biased more on urban for our average mpg/co2 rating, then these weighty additions would be a much bigger concern for manufacturers!

er....................very small and under-nourished rugby players, possibly. More like 2 - 3 rugger chaps, shirley ? Still a lot of weight to shed, though.

As for why.................no idea. Sounds as though they're just continuing their onanism of recent years.

Another variant to choose from. Lets say I am an avid Porsche collector, and 2009 is the year I will purchase every variant of the 911, who wants to work out the cost of buying every 911 variant in standard trim?

I am sad enough to do the following:

Carrera £61.744
Carrera Cabriolet £68.878
Carrera S £68.878
Carrera S Cabriolet £76.013
Carrera 4 £66.011
Carrera 4 Cabriolet £73.146
Carrera 4S £73.146
Carrera 4S Cabriolet £80.281
Targa 4 £71.443
Targe 4S £78.578
GT3 £81.914
GT2 £128.307
Turbo £99.679
Turbo Convertable £105.904

Thats £1.133.922 before the new GT2 RS comes out. Bargain really as I would then not have the agony of choosing between all the fricking models.
You missed the GT3 RS

Heh.
spot on...for months now porsche fans have wanted a Cayman CS, that then appears
Then the GT3 is announced and it looks superb
and now a gt2 RS.

all announced (ok not strictly) within a month.. a response to Nissan without doubt and its only good for us car buyers.

I wonder how many people would buy a Carrera 2 Targa if they did one.

Bloody brilliant idea.

Its about time Porsche got back to making real cars instead of trying to kid us all that GT3 and the latest RS are lightweight specials. They're economic specials and have been since they foisted the 996 on us.

A lightweight GT2 RS? The widowmaker is back smile

Guy's right - loosing 200 kilos sounds very unlikely, bear in mind an RSR weighs 1245.

I reckon 1350 is more likely.
Agreed.

Unless they decide to make substantial use of carbon fibre (or, worse, fibreglass or plastic! eek ). And junk every single toy from the car as standard and make you pay to put them all back in again...

Oh...and the comment about the GTR...I think you're spot-on, I think that stung them...that and the resurgence of the Gallardo.

why couldnt they just make the 'normal' GT 2 the best it can be??? instead of watering it down a bit so they could make a faster one???

disappointment......

Since when have center-locking wheels been authorised on a road car (bar in the UK of course)?

I can already sense the anger on the faces of the Porsche engineers when the V-Spec beats the GT2-RS round the 'ring.

That would be rugby playing Oompaloompas, then? 2-300kg = 4-6 rugby players = 50kg per man.

I'm not sure the world needs yet another 911 variant and I'd question the likelihood of shedding 200kg but a (more) hardcore GT2 ? PAG have the money and I'd like to see what they could do...
Possibly pedantic to point out that 1 x Prop = about 3.5 scrum half.....

Our 997 Cup racecar is around 1180kg and our 997 RSR GT2 racecar weighs the same without its ballast, so it isn't an insurmountable challenge to make a 1250kg road car - especially as the racecars have lot more rollcage than a road car would.

Porsche always underplays its claims (as do all the Germans), so if they say it's possible it generally is.

This should be awesome, more power and even lighter. Also dont forget that the old GT2 porsche was faster than the GTR around the ring in the wet in the DR test.

http://magazines.drivers-republic.com/driversrepub...

It would be great if you could order all cars in a lightweight version, i dont need electrical adjustable seats and electric windows etc. Even the BMW CSL has to have electric windows.
