How about that Lancia with the Ferrari engine? Saying that it's probably not that quick by today's standards.
Thema 8.32 - I think you're right

How about a debadged Lotus Carlton - could fairly easily be mistaken for an old Vauxhall - but a 5 up saloon and 180MPH!!

I think they are pretty rare and pretty expensive IIRC.

E34 M5 touring

Debadge and it's just another boxy old 5 series on the road. Body kit is much much more subtle than the E39 or current M5.

My brothers 205 is pretty good it's got a few dings, a little bit of rust, some plastic pannels are missing and the 1.9 badges are missing. But it's got a 2 litre engine and stripped out.

I may be wrong, but I think we've kind of strayed away from the OP may have had in mind. i.e. an accessible mass produced car, that looks inconspicuous, but has the capacity to open a can of whup-ass when required (I think his interpretation of that was 400bhp and up).
Lets quit trawling Youtube oddities in the hope of finding an aeroplane-engined 2CV to out-pimp everyone else with.
How about this?

My thoughts exactly ~ far too many higher profile vehicles suggested which could never be called "sleepers" The MGZT 260 scrapes in being regarded by most as merely a tarted up Rover .... and as most PHers will confirm whilst nodding off, no such thing as a fast or powerful Rover. Everybody knows that... wink

Zzzzzzzzzzzz... Wake up there ...... Now that's a sleeper ....smile

I kinda agree because a 2cv and a Camper van aren't exactly subtle.

However, he didn't specify it had to be a production car/unmodified. If it does have to be a proddy car though, then I'd say you can't go wrong with a Passat W8
