I've owned 2 in the past in the early 90s, great cars at the time. I read somewhere that the later (1986) Sierra Cosworth 3 door was very nearly going to use the exact body shell, instead they based it on the single piece rear window of the low spec 1.6L 2 door coupe. Many later XR4is were made into 3 Door Cosworth replicas by cutting out the 2 piece windows and converting it to a 1 piece like the Cosworth. The XR4i made the better copy due to most having a factory sunroof like most 3 dr Cosworths, most of the 1.6L replicas didn't have the sunroof from factory. Also the XR4i was a little more convincing performance wise, and lots of crash damaged 3 dr Cosworths were reshelled into either the XR4i or 1.6L shell.

Early prototypes of the 3-dr Cosworth used the 4-pillar XR4i shell for aerodynamic testing as the 3-pillar shell wasn't then available. However it had already been decided to use the up and coming 3-pillar shell to distance it from the one-off XR4i which wasn't received as well by the public as had been hoped, partly because of the bi-plane spoilers and one-off styling that Bob Lutz had wanted. By the time the Cosworth project was in full flow Bob Lutz had gone to Chrysler and they had decided to go with the 3-pillar shell

My Dad got one in '83, seemed ever so futuristic in those days, good for tours through France, as Mum said over the XR3i as it had 'Two picnic tables' smile

smile

Don't think it provided any real downforce but it did reduce the Cd slightly compared to the 5-door. More of a styling exercise than anything else

Love your car, great to see a well specced example in the same hands for so long! As for you Shropshiremike, I reckon you've got a blue oval shaped beard! Are you a Ford technician or is this a hobby? biggrin

Good fun. I had one with a turbo technics kit a few years back that was hilarious, until it went bang.

There's one on ebay at the moment with a twin turbo, 5 litre V8 pushing 450hp. I bet it's a hand full.

Woah mumma - would love to have one of these! My brother had one as his first car (standard 4i) and I still remember the rumble!

It brings back such good memories - him with his 4i and me with my mk2 XR2 on the drive. I just don't think you would get the same emotions with a 307 and a 207 sat on the drive...

Well, it nearly only got the 2.3 V6 so at least it ended up with the 2.8 capacity

No. I just thought that judging by your posts, if anyone would, it would be you! I used to have an unhealthy obsession with the 1980's Ford range as a teenager, the trivia I seem to have retained is quite frightening!
