I'd imagine the aluminium used in the 458 is laughable compared to aerospace grade too. I think McLaren know a thing or two about making composite chassis.
There is a common misconception that aerospace is more advanced than the F1 industry. It's actually the other way round, the engineering and technology in F1 leaves aerospace in the dark ages.F1 is the most advanced engineering industry in the world. Only the cleverest minds get the chance to work for a top F1 team.
To state that the materials they use are "gash" and are somehow inferior to aerospace is laughable.
I'll state my point again, this car was designed by some of the cleverest, most successful people in the world, applying the most advanced engineering known to man.

I just hope no one ever crashes one. It's made out of some seriously gash grade carbon fiber material. If you compare it to aerospace grade stuff it's laughable. Still, a fool and their money are easily parted as they say
Do you speak from a position of knowledge here? I'm just curious if that's an opinion based on knowing or having seen the McLaren tub or is it's just an assumption?Genuine question.

Genuine question.
I know a guy who works for an aerospace company who Mclaren subcontract some of their Carbon fiber work to. He has done a few impromptu "experiments" with the stuff the Mclaren lot work with versus the stuff he works with. he's not terribly complimentary to say the least. Genuine question.

I've got this image in my head of them pulling back the covers on Thursday and there being a pile of carbon fiber dust undeneath with a steering wheel sticking out of it
Yeah, what would they know? It's not as if they built the most revered supercar of the 20th Century, not to mention their countless experiences in building some of the most successful and hi-tech racing cars in the history of the entire planet. Much of it out of carbon fibre. You do talk some unadulterated ste.

Ah yes, he means the old Farbio...(which it looks nothing like at all )

NOTHING like? I think that's being a bit liberal with the truth... It's a not dissimilar shape (although you can say it looks rather like a lot of other supercars).JJ
I suspect the proof (or otherwise) of the McLaren pudding will lie in how it drives.

Go for it, I really want to see someone take on the Ferrari, teh car sounds and looks as good as teh 458, but does it goe as well, dont bring it to the market unless it does buys!!
Unfortunately it would appear Mclaren have tried to make a hypercar during a monster recession with the budget of a Kia Rio, so I doubt it'll be good enough to chalenge the Ferrari.Syndrome said:

I'd certainly be more than happy to be in it.
