The "Dub" scene
Discussion
Ive got a Mk1 and a Corrado......i am not a scenester.... I like the fact that the cars can be easily tuned, fettled and all of the parts from every era seem to be usable on everything else. The mk1 has a 20vt engine in from a Audi S3/TT and is essentially a sleeper (a bloody quick one), the corrado is a VR6 track car, its well set up and one of the best handling fwd cars i have ever driven.
I dont do Bentley wheels or intentional rust.
Though i did have a roofrack

I used to be well into it, and to an extent still follow it, some of the cars are absolutely stunning and really left an impact on me. Unfortunately barry and gazza now think the only thing to do is copy other people and you get so many people copying any good idea. Some seem to think taking things too far is where its at and that is just stupid unless its very over the top.
Examples of well done ones.... IMO

and here we are today in a wildersness surrounded by tts in rusty slammed heaps of ste, high fiving each other over their latest Minisrty Of Dub sticker.
Whilst I agree with you to a certain extent, the view of people on Pistonheads is MX5 and Beemer-loving saddos with more money than sense, fapping away to Nurburgring lap times.Who was after me with the tar-brush?
edition38 is the place where all the cool scenesters hang out. They seem to be the kind of people who think they are 'random' and 'wacky' when realy it's just a fashion show and willy waving as to who can go lower. There are some nice cars on there but it's all so contrived and boring I find. I much prefer to visit ClubGTI where the more old skool bunch of guys tend to hang out, the kind who appreciate the engineering of the GTI rather than the fashion side of it.
I keep seeing little Lupo's and Arosa's with multicoloured wing mirrors and wheels driven by young kids who must think they are really cool, usually with the seat tilted right back. Makes me cringe when I see it.

Saw a Polo (99ish model, I think) getting pulled over by the police the other night. Lowered to te floor, with lime green wheels on the front, and pink on that back. Pedobear and bunch of random stickers on the back. And the driver was wearing White sunglasses, in the dark.
Hateful looking thing.

I can't get my head round the current fad for 'rust-look' paint on aircooled VWs. I find rust an ugly, unsightly thing that strikes fear into the hearts of most classic enthusiasts so the idea of someone trying to make their car look like it's had it is just beyond me I'm afraid.
You've noticed the rust effect as it's quite obvious, but possibly haven't realised those same people also paint warts on their genitals, add green food colouring when baking cakes, spray otter urine to their armpits, and apply those hilarious stickers that make it look like a golf ball has hit your windscreen. I think it's pretty cool.Willber said:

Which is why the clever money goes to VW Action - the cars there are pretty much secondary to the drinking and mucking about. There are, of course, row apon row of identical "individual" cars, but every now and again you come across a gem. I really don't get the "Rat" look, or the elasticated tyres thing, or the roof-rack full of car-boot sale junk. But I can appreciate a (relatively) unmolested Mk1 or Mk2 Golf with sympathetic and suble mods.I inadvertantly wandered into the VW "scene" a few years back with the Scirocco and signed up to a well-known "Dubz" forum (the one that dismisses a staple of the Eastern diet). As soon as I realised it was populated by children with driving licences, I sloped off. Model-specific forums are much nicer places, on the whole.

What is a scary fad is all the mkiv Golfs skimming the deck that have had parts of the chassis removed for clearance. Now I may find this scary because I don't know enough about this 'mod', I'll hold my hands up on that one but cutting lumps out of the chassis doesn't seem the stuff of grounded engineering to a layman.
Not heard of that one, but it doesn't sound like the cleverest idea in the world.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
