But also looking at 4x4s whistle

For those of you using winter tyres on FWD cars, is it necessary to get them on all 4 corners or will just the fronts suffice?

This doesn't sound like a good idea to me. You will have more grip at the front than at the back. You might think that's OK until you hit a patch of snow or ice (maybe even just cold water) and the front will grip where the back doesn't and you'll end up pointing the wrong way in no time.

Interesting thread guys - thanks!!

The tyres on my Civic are getting near replacement and I'm wondering what to go with. As it's a standard daily driver and I live in the south and am spared the worst of the winter conditions for all but a couple of weeks a year, I wonder if all season tyres might be the way to go.

Any thoughts or feedback on that?

RE050As are one of the less awful summer tyres, but even a winter-biased all season tyre like the Quattrac 3 makes them look silly in wintery conditions.

Mmm mytyres have none in that size and they're the only site I've found that has a good selection for mine (225/50/16).

I've wondered about that - just leaving them on through the summer too. It rarely gets that warm where I live and I don't do many miles anyway so had considered just running them all year.

We have a set for both cars.

One has a set of nokian wr g2 xl and the other bridgestone blizzak lm30.

Both are 195 55 16 and I would say the nokians are the better ones in snow.

Winter tyres will outperform summer ones when the temperature is lower than 7 degrees Celsius. I'd have thought that even in the south that would be the case a significant amount of the time in the winter.

Interesting you say that as the WRG2's are becoming known as the "dry optimised" winter tyres - ie excellent in the dry and average in the snow.

I ran the WRG2s for a while in summer but they do wear out very quickly.

They were brilliant in the winter last year on my fwd Volvo, even on ice I was able to pull away without hassle and in the worst of the weather, I was able to continue to use the country lanes on my commute rather than reverting to the main roads. They really are a league above a typical summer tyre when used in winter and the benefit is you can stop much better too, it's not just about steering and not getting stuck.

They are not tyres you can add studs to, so they are not extreme weather tyres but they are also fine to use on dry days when the temp rises above 10 degrees. They're also not noisy like extreme winter tyres so offer the ideal compromise for us in the UK where for 3 weeks a year we have a bit of snow and ice and for the rest of the winter it's just cold (below 7 degrees), frosty and wet. Even in general cold winter conditions they perform better than the Michelins they replace.

I'll be buying 2 more and putting them back on in November, maybe start of Dec depending on when it gets cold.

+1 for Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme. Use 225/40R18 on my 4x4 Octavia. Simply will not let go. Snowchains now seem redundant.

Much better grip in the summer than my Vredestein Sessantas

Use Vredestein ComTrac Winter on my Van (VW T25), keep them on year round now.

Use Vredestein SnowTrac on my Subaru Forester (lives in the Alps). Good, but not like the Wintrac Xtreme.

We've got Snowtrac3's on the X-type in the winter. Absolutely amazing when I saw how much others were struggling on regular tyres.
I'll have the Wintrac Extremes on the Porsche this winter as we need both cars available this year and can't take the chances of having one out of use due to snow again.

Currently have nokian WR's for the Audi A6 and they are fantastic. Are so good in the Alps that we have yet to pull over to add snow chains in really bad conditions.

Previously we had Pirelli Snowsports and they were great too.

Couple of things to note as I haven't seen them mentioned as yet:

1) They have a life of about 4yrs max before the rubber goes hard and they go off
2) Once you get down to about 4mm, the peformance drop off is quite marked in snowy conditions, the sipes are not deep then and as a result they don't bite the surface in the same way. there are some exceptions, the Nokians sipes are very deep and they should hold on down to maybe 3mm.

Ours usually go on in November and come off in April and have been worth every penny, we dont use summer rubber in winter anymore and with last year's weather we were mobile throughout.

I drove straight out of this on New years day.
Similar story for me in an M5 on Conti WinterSportContacts.
