It could be policed by having a tax disk with your name/address inserted into a bright yellow arm band(change color each year), you put it on before cycling, You only pay once no matter how many bikes you have. Yes they can be faked but like everything else you run the risk of getting caught.

p.s please read the original post before makeing a stupid comments.
How much would that cost to do though? Wouldn't you rather resources were spent on untaxed, uninsured cars who do a lot more damage?

Taxing bikes is stupid because the roads aren't paid for by road tax, they are paid for by local and national taxes. VED is an emissions tax, and my bike doesn't emit anything.

What about instead arguing that tax exempt pre 1974 cars should pay road tax from now on?

so.. kids goto a friends house for a birthday sleepover.. friend gets a bike for his bday.

all the kids then start taking turns on the bike in the street.

would the police really want to bring charges against all these children?

what if they all had tax, but the parents didnt realise there would be a bike present at the sleepover so didnt pack their coloured armband?

i still vote NO

Jesus - now you want people to wear items of clothing to prove they have paid tax? What colour armband do I get for paying my income tax?!

It should be on petrol anyway , more use = more tax - the only fair way!
Tax petrol? They should have thought of that.

there are some perfectly decent cycles lanes that I pass on a regular basis on the way into work where I live now & where I lived before; very clean & clear of any rubbish/debris, near enough non existant foot traffic using them, had many many thousands of pounds spent on creating them so that cyclists didn't have to ride on the roads next to them which contain excessive traffic and are not wide enough or have enough stretches with good visibility to allow for easy passing of anything moving slower than the flow (tractors bicycles etc)
So what do the cyclists do, still use the bloody road & gaze at the cyclepath lovingly as they ride next to it while causing traffic jams behind them!
But if you're doing a decent speed (18mph or so) you should be on the road (not on a shared footpath/cyclepath).

The law:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/shropshire/6303...

and the Department for Transport: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http:/...

agree.

Cyclepaths are usually just an expensive token effort. I'd rather councils didn't bother, frankly, becuase it makes people take the view above - that becuase it's there, cyclists should be compelled to use it - which is horse manure.

What about the emissions of the rider? wink

My usual response is that we pay the same rate as cars with the same level of emissions (ie zero).

But the idea isn't entirely without merit - nominal ten pounds per year for cycle specific purposes - usable cycle lanes/traffic lights etc.

It would give cyclist a formal voice as taxpayers. Negatives are that it would cost more to collect than it's worth, and would discourage people from cycling and the reduction in health costs to the NHS.

On balance, I will have to reject the suggestion.

Do they tax the emissions of the driver? No, didn't think so.

And last time I checked I was eating renewable fuel (organic matter, meat and veg), not coal or oil.

But if you want to introduce a tax on breathing, why don't you put it to the popular vote?

Sorry but since when does Road Tax go back into the transport infrastructure. You'll just be giving the Gubberment more cash for themselves.

Part of me would love to pay a tenner for my very own tax disk I could point to when a motorist goes into an ill informaed rant about me not paying to use the roads because I pay no "road tax".

Cycle lanes are local authority maintained I think, so it comes off your council tax anyway...ie, take it up with your council, at which point I'd be happy to pay ten to twenty quid a year for a dedicated cycle lane infrastructure, but would actually prefer them to be pavement based where possible (like Bristol), rather than road based.

So the mouth breathers understand. Apparently VED is too difficult a concept to grasp.

Cast your mind all the way back to yesterday, when some bell-end thought he had caught VED off a Thai ladyboy.

Is that right? I think I got the story right. smile
